Gray Mama is a TNR rescue who is one year old.
She is up to date on her shots.
FeLV/FIV test is negative.
She was last treated for fleas (Advantage) in June 2016.
She was last treated for worms (Drontal) in June 2016.
She eats well and walks with her tail up. Her eyes are bright, not weak at all.
Hard to tell if she's lethargic since she's a new mom and wants to spend all of her time with her baby.
Gray had one (massive) kitten on Tuesday (8/3). I had suspected she was pregnant, but only because her nipples were pink and more pronounced than normal. I had no idea she was full term.
Anyway, the kitten was cleaned up, but she hadn't chewed the cord and she hadn't passed the placenta. I gave her about 45 minutes, then tied off the cord and clipped the kitten free.
At noon, she still hadn't passed the placenta, so I took her to the vet. My vets, whom I had been going to for 20+ years, retired at the end of 2015, so I saw someone else at the same practice. Vet #1.
I told Vet #1 everything that had happened and asked if she could have some Oxytocin and Convenia (x-rays confirmed there were no more kittens). He told me that although a retained placenta was possible, it was rare in cats and that he'd never seen one in his entire career. He sent me away without either and advised I give it another 24 hours.
Tuesday night was hell, and I was first at the vet on Wednesday (8/4). I would have taken her to the 24 hour vet, but my boyfriend had taken my car to get it serviced, and I couldn't find anyone local who would answer their phone at 3AM. Anyway, on Wednesday, we saw Vet #2. Vet #2 took her temp (106F), did a CBC (white cell count 29,000), tested for FeLV/FIV (both negative), tested her kidney function and blood calcium levels (both normal). He gave her Oxytocin, a shot of Baytril, and oral Baytril to be taken once a day for 10 days.
I followed up on Friday (8/5) to have her temperature checked. She also still had not passed anything other than some mild spotting, and she kept squatting like she had to pee. Her temp was down, but only just barely--104F. Vet #2 recommended an emergency spay, which would be performed by Vet #3.
Vet #3 did the spay. She did in fact have a retained placenta, as well as a section of uterus that hadn't come down yet. She was given Metacam for pain and sent home. I was told she could nurse her kitten if she wanted to (and she did).
She did well over the weekend. Then Monday (8/8) I noticed some clear-with-a-pink-tinge spotting. Tuesday (8/9, yesterday) I checked her incision and noticed a tiny hole--about the size of a pin head--with bright red coming out of it. Back to the vet we went.
We saw Vet #3 again. He checked her temp--103F--and suggested we couple the Baytril with Convenia. He gave her an injection to help with the fever, plus another Metacam injection.
Last night, the wound opened even more--two dime-sized holes. I took her to 24 hours vet 45 minutes away, who immediately took her into surgery. He said the abdominal wall was intact, but that he cleaned out a lot of necrotic tissue in the first two layers. He closed her with sutures instead of glue this time, and said to have her checked, either by him or by my vet, every other day until this infection has cleared up.
Needless to say, I'm confused and overwhelmed at all that has happened. I don't know why she's having such a hard time and why the antibiotics aren't working on this infection. Has anyone else been through something like this?
