My "newly" adopted fur baby has a big bald spot on his belly. At first I thought it was because he was quite overweight when he adopted him. I assumed maybe that had something to do with it. The vet didn't mention it when we had him checked over. The other day I accidentally touched it and he wasn't bothered but I noticed that it was stubbly like a man's face. And so I started paying closer attention and I realized he licks there A LOT. He seems happy and healthy other than that. I'm just wondering if it's normal or if I should take him back to the vet. He's about 2 and he's been with us for maybe 2 months now.

Are there any raw or red patches?  Cats are notorious for ring-worm, although I'd think the vet would have caught that.  I do know that OCD is not that uncommon in cats, and you might have a bit of that going on.  Jackson Galaxy has delt with it several times over the years.  Someone here with the right information will find you shortly.  Meanwhile, try searching OCD here.  I did, and found several threads discussing it (in people AND in cats...you'll have to pay some attention), and one article.

I had a big boy who couldn't groom past his belly because of his size. There was no irritation or infection there. He licked a similar spot like this. I began using wipes to clean him where he had problems reaching and he stopped over grooming his belly. It was as if it was habit for him to spend x amount of time on grooming his lower quarters when he was thin and trim that he spent the same amount down after he got to be a big boy even though he wasn't reaching anywhere else but the one spot on the belly. Can your baby reach all over down there and all over to groom?

My vet said Isis was a "fastidious groomer" when he couldn't identify a reason for her bald belly. Years later, when adding fish oil supplement to her food, she was almost bald. Eliminating fish from her diet solved the problem and her hair grew back completely. Another time, my husband overfed a ravenous stray. he started licking his belly raw and I really think it had something to do with the food we were giving him. Just a thought..

We had a cat once that would lick himself until he was bald and then bite the skin underneath. The vet said it was stress (and seeing that your guy had been through a lot I would suspect the same). It's stubbly, so maybe it is just growing back? The vet didn't mention it so I wouldn't be too concerned. But I would schedule a visit to maybe see if he needs some kitty Prozac or Valium or if you have a holistic vet some belladonna. Please keep us updated on what this was.

Try removing grain and dry food, he will slim down and it might stop, mine did. Grain was the culprit and the weight, which is triggered by dry food.

My Pushy started doing this about a couple of winters ago. He just kept on licking his big flabby belly until it was bald. It stayed bald for a couple of months and while I was concerned, he was otherwise fine. Then it grew back and now he has a lovely soft fluffy belly again. He hasn't done it since, and I don't know why he did that in the first place. :dk:
When his fur was growing back it was stubbly like you described S stephcb

It could also be an allergic reaction...to what I don't know...it could be his food...it could be from chemicals used on floors to clean etc...my cousins cat had exactly that...turns out she had allergies...best bet is to go back to vet and tell him whats up...
