Looking desperately for advice. Our cat (14 years old) pees and poops everywhere in the house. Why is she doing that? We have tried to encourage him to use his box, to no avail. What can we do? How can we help her (and us)? The vet cannot find any problems with her health.

Also, is one type of cat litter better for this problem than another type?

Thank you!

my kitty does that when he is constipated. He peed outside the litterbox - and thanks god we pit some training pads to line the area, so no heavy cleaning up. And he jumped on our bed and pooped while we are sleeping!
I guess as everyone here might suggest the first thing to do is to take her to the vet to eliminate health issues. Then see if there has been any changes in your household that could trigger the behavior.

stress??? anything change in the house? new people, furniture, noise?

are there any animals hanging around outside?? that could do it..

It may just be a habit.. how many litter boxes does your cat have??

Get more and place them where you cat is defecting.

I know Jackson Galaxy had a cat with the same situation.. I think it was behavioral..

I think that cat was really pooping under the coach. They had to block off all areas of access to it.. and try different litters and different types of litter boxes..covered and uncovered.. He did succeed..

did you try any feliway plug in or Rescue Remedy... to calm him?

Does your can have enough play time?? and toys to play with? Are they lonely?

lots of thoughts, but you do have to be patient and try them, one by one..and keep track of it...

And use an enzymatic disinfectant to clean all areas...and things..

Have you tried cat attract litter. Ive heard it works quite well. Have you gotten the cat checked out, maybe there is a health issue because cats are good by nature that way. So it may be behavioural and if thats the case, you have to figure out what the issue is. Not easy

How many litter boxes do you have and how often do you clean the box(es)? Do you have an open box or a covered box? How long has your cat not been using the litter box normally? Can you think of anything that may have caused your cat to stop using the litter box no matter how unrelated it may be? Is this your only cat / pet?

There are articles on litter boxes here if you scroll down the page a bit: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/248996/tcs-cat-care-grooming-resources-articles-and-important-threads Another good article with litter box tips and common issues for not using the box is http://catinfo.org/?link=litterbox

A second vet opinion may  be helpful. Bloodwork and urine work should be done to determine if there is an underlying medical issue that may be causing your cat to not use the litter box. A general physical exam where the vet palpates the abdomen and looks in the eyes and ears will not tell very much about what's going inside the body.
