Hi everyone. There's a possibly abandoned cat in my friend's neighborhood that's very friendly but unneutered and covered in fleas. He was also attacked by her cat in her yard and now has a cut on his nose. My friend is feeding him food and water but doesn't want to take him into her house at the risk of infesting her own cats.

What is the best way to take care of him? Neither one of us has ever treated a cat with fleas. And what is the best course of action to take? Has anyone ever dealt with a similar situation? Should we try to bathe him before taking him to be neutered?

Best is to take him in, and have him in a room where its easy to clean, and the room is also quarantine.

There are Capstar tablets, whom kills instantly off adult fleas.  Harmless to the cat, deadly to fleas.  Of course, it must be supplemented with some mroe regular defleaser.   Observe, if he has much fleas, them dying en masse and wriggling in convulsions will make him feel funny, so he may react some...

With this, he can be taken to the vet for check up, prescription of dewormer, and neutering...

If he is friendly, you can also bathe him beforehand. It will feel more nice for the vet.   :)

Tx for caring!

I am not sure I would try to bath him unless you know he is friendly enough.  If he is use, Dawn dish soap (the regular blue kind) - it is an excellent flea killer.  You will have to flea comb him as well but the Dawn should get the majority of fleas.

If you can get him to the vet, he can be treated before you take him into your home.  Stefan is correct - a room to himself is best right now, until he adjusts.  A bathroom is good, as it is more easily cleaned.

If the vet is not an option, is there a no-kill shelter or rescue near you that might help?

Why not get a topical flea med and simply treat him while petting him?

Then bring him in, and get him fixed and a vaccine.

Poor guy, what a sad life, and imagine how he feels :(

Thanks you for helping/caring.

Vinigar Niue what I used in an orphan kitten, bathe him if you can with dawn dish soap (I used Ajax actually) and then do a vinegar rinse and leave it on, do not wash it off sigh water, whatever fleas you didn't kill will flee from his body, they hate viniga
