Hi there! My cat winter has been in her birthing box off and on since early this morning.. her breathing is considerably faster than normal since last night. Her milk is in also. Is she in the first stages of labor? And if so, is she still in the normal time frame for the first stage? It's been about 24 hours with the fast breathing. Thank u!

I dont.. she went in to get spayed 4 weeks ago, thats how we found out she was preggers and didnt have the heart to terminate. It just seems like her labor is starting and stopping. Im so confused lol. I have been able to feel the kittens for almost 3 weeks and have been able to see them move for 2 weeks. This is her first liter, so i know things can take a little longer. Her belly has looked like it has dropped for almost a week also. All day today, she just goes back and forth between my lap and her birthing box while purring and breathing alot faster than normal.. the breathing has been since yesterday (first noticed it about 8pm last night). It is now 9:30pm the next night.. sigh. Havent noticed any fluid from her lady parts. She licks her belly alot but not so much her lady areas yet. Shes set on confusing me

Little bit of an update.. her breathing is just as fast as it was but now they are deeper breaths, not shallow like they have been for over 24 hours. Could this mean she is finally transitioning out of stage 1?

difficult to say.  Anyways, its nearing... Prelabor may be quite long, its long intensive active labor we dont like, ie the active pushing phase maximum one hour, and its maximum - should be much shorter.

Dont forget to rub her tummy if she wants and allows.  Its nice massage if nothing else.

Thank you for your response. I was around one other birthing queen and it went very fast compared to winter. Shes so uncomfortable and miserable.. i really feel bad for her. So basically as long as shes not in distress or pushing for more than an hour, i should probably stop worrying (but its so hard).

She also just now had a little bit of a poopy accident which has never ever happened before. Loose but not too bad. Is this also normal?

yes.

Re possible long active labour including active pushing - of course, if its longer than 30 minutes you will sweat - as its IS long... but in practice its perhaps not so easy to rush to vet... but max one hour, if so its life threatening on momma....
