Hi gang!

Both my elderly kitties are doing well from their bout of pancreatitis a week and a half ago. I dropped their prednisone back down to 1 daily as requested by the vet. Well, yesterday, as the day went on, my boy started to feel lousy. Restless at first, no appetite and obvious discomfort by midnight. I gave him half a dose of buperorphine because he gets wasted on the dose given, and that helped a bit. My boy suffers from megacolon (diagnosed at 2 yrs and he's 17 this December). So, it was hard to know what was ailing him. Tummy was not sensitive but he was not a happy camper.

By 3am, he began have the runs. Not liquid, but 'melted peanut butter' consistency. I had metronitozole(anti diarrhea) here (my cats have more meds than I do!), and by 4am, I gave him a dose of that. That didn't work right away, but he was not particularly bothered. While he was back and forth to the litter box and leaking, he stayed out in the living room area on mouse patrol (I live in an older historical building). So, that was a good sign. My gut told me it was a result of his drop in prednisone.

Got him to the vet this morning but by then, he'd had some pretty good solid bowel movements (and lots of loose stuff). His poor tushie was so sore--I used the softest toilet paper to help him clean up and he did settled and konk out, wanted food (I didn't feed him before the vet just to be on the safe side).

He was cleaned, hydrated, and we are now going to give him b-12 injections. I noticed a HUGE change in him right away!! His appetite is back, and he was perky and obviously comfortable. He's staying on 2 prednisone  daily, 5 days of the metronitozole 2x daily, his regular ciscipride (I'm not doing that until tomorrow and letting his colon have a rest).

Have any other mega colon parents used B-12? Have any other mega colon parents had their kitties develop the runs later on in their lives? Bandit never had the runs except the odd time, but it would clear up after a bit of loose stool behind hard stool from his mega colon.

Just curious to know what your experiences were. I'm planning on giving them myself----will do that at the vet next week to make sure I do it right, and then take the rest home with me.

Thanks for any insight! :)
