I'm planning on adopting  a 1 yr old mom and two 13-week old kittens. They're currently eating FirstMate Chicken but potato is listed as the third ingredient as is dicalcium phosphate. I've done quite a big of research on cat nutrition and many say dicalcium phosphate is toxic in large amounts, and potato is too carby. I know there's no such thing as the perfect cat food, but I am trying to minimize the bad ingredients (i.e. carrageenan, guar gum/xantham gum, etc). However, I've also heard good things about Weruva but it's got potato starch, dicalcium phosphate and xanthan gum in its ingredient list. But I think if I keep it in rotation with other wet foods it should be fine.

For those that know a lot about cat nutrition, I'd like to know what you think about the following dry and wet diet. I'm thinking of keeping it 50/50. I know a lot of people say no to dry food at all but I feel like if you give them lots of wet as well they should be fine. Especially as kittens they're eating a lot so an all wet diet is kind of pricey (although one refuses to eat any dry food).

Its awsome that your planning to adopt! Way to go! I thought I would let you know what I feed my cats. I have 5 and feeding them the best food possible keeps vet bills down and everyone happy and healthy. Nutrition plays a part in behavior-have you ever noticed how some cats who get fed lower quality food are a little grumpy sometimes? Anyway, so it sounds like you have a good grasp on the nutritional needs of your cats. I would reccomend Fromm Catfood if you can find it. Very good stuff, made in the US from human grade ingridients and very nutritonally balnaced. No junk food here. They have about 12 flavors to pick from and my cats really liked gamebird. Most places that sell it also have samples. Try as many as you can.the other one is called Go! and its a petcurian brand. Petcurian is also made and sourced in the US and is the next best thing to raw food. I highly reccomend this brand. An large 16lb bag of the Go! usually cost about 60 bucks depending on where you get it from and last my 5 cats about 3 weeks or more and everyone is free fed. Fromm last a little less but it also typically cost 20% less than Go!.

Good luck!

As far as kibble goes, Orijen, Acana, Fromm and Go are all decent brands.

Weruva is known to be a good brand, but I would like to see something other than water as the second ingredient.  Even chicken broth would be better than water, IMHO.

I don't know...I'm about ready to give up on cat food
.  I only feed wet food, but lately my boys have been having soft stools, and I swear it's from Tapioca Starch.  I rarely ever feed anything with Carrageenan in it, but occasionally some of their food has Tapioca Starch, and every time it does... stinky, loose stools,  But it seems like more and more foods have it in them.  Maybe I need to try Weruva again myself, even with Water as the 2nd ingredient.  Or maybe I need to try Go!, even though I haven't ever seen it in any of my local stores  (just googled it...nearest store is 10 miles away
)  Boy, did I get off track here, sorry!!!!!!

So, I think any of the foods listed above are AOK
That is, IF your cats will eat them, AND tolerate them well

I would give the Go! a shot. Its worth the drive.  Alternatively, homemade food could be an option. My vet suggested the site balanceit.com where you can order special for your kitty vitamin powders that you mix with raw food. That might eliminate some of that tapioca starch or potato. I've also tried Halo with my dogs who adored it and I've heard great things about the cat version. Much like Go!, Halo is made and sourced in the US.

For MY furkids, I used to feed raw, then two of the three went on a raw strike, so I started doing homecooked,..that didn't go over well except when it was fresh out of the oven.  No way was I going to cook every meal fresh, that's why I have a vacuum sealer and a freezer (WHICH, I bought specifically for THEM)
.  Anyway, also tried Halo and one cat likes it so, so, but it's FULL and I mean FULL of vegies, which they don't need.  I end up tossing about 1/4 of each can down the garbage disposal because I don't want them filling up on carrots, peas and green beans

Thanks for your suggestions (even though technically none of them addressed what I asked, LOL). I did some math and the food I listed above just isn't very economical - I think I'm going to try to limit dry food but I'll definitely need to find some economical wet food. I'll look into some of the brands you guys have mentioned and report back if I ever figure this out haha.
