G'day

Sugar is my 15 month old Siamese. Just this arvo we noticed this mark on her ear. It's very sore and red which you can see if you look at it from underneath into the light. I won't go into the contortions that went into that little effort. Suffice it to say I wasn't able to take a photo from that angle.

Twice a day Sugar goes into her modified green house for her outdoor time. She's locked in and it's cat proof. There's grass growing in there and weeds etc. A mulberry tree shades it and it's just starting to fruit. There's insects etc including a ground nest of big black ants a few feet from the door. I mention these things in case somebody thinks that therein lays a cause.

The other possibility is that Spike who will be 5 months next week has started to feel his oats so to speak and has been trying to mount her and generally roughing her up a bit. He will be fixed by 0900 tomorrow so that would be an easy solution.  But he will be the priority tomorrow. I had trouble finding a vet who will do him before 6 months.

I will be taking her to the vet Friday unless somebody thinks it can't wait that long. I put some aloe vera from the garden on it a couple of hours ago. It seems slightly better and has not got any worse so far.

I've tried for ages to get a photo of it and this is the best I can do. It's flaming hard to take photos of black cats and cat bits isn't it?

I'm glad you stated you had another cat, because I was going to say I thought it was an injury from another cat. I'm treating an abscess right now on one of the ears of my house cat where he got bit. You'll be very lucky to not get an abscess there, they are a bugger to treat! If it swells up and gets tender then you have an abscess. It will burst and drain and if you're lucky that will be all. The one my cat has now has burst three times, despite treatment. You can clean the area ONE time with 1/2 peroxide and 1/2 water, no more, or it will do tissue damage. Then just keep it clean with a wound care product like Vetrycin, made for cats. You will have to watch for signs of infection (or abscess), heat, redness, swelling and oozing, and if this develops you will need to call your vet for an antibiotic. I give this in tuna juice (save the rest in the fridge) and they usually lap it right up. I'm glad you are getting that boy neutered, he'll start spraying and yowling and won't leave your poor female alone, they are very rough with teh females and injuries can easily happen. Remember too, that the hormones in your male don't completely clear out for weeks, so watch him. Neutering is much easier on cats then spaying, so he will be his old self in a day or less.

I just saw the photo, it looks like an abscess. Put warm compresses on it several times a day until it bursts. It has to be kept open after bursting to drain, and that is not easy to do, keep antibiotic salve in it and clean it a couple times a day.If it doesn't seem to be healing, call your vet for that antibiotic, you don't want the infection getting into the blood stream. The best thing to do would be to go to your vets and let him lance it open. All the luck!

Thank you very much for your help. It is noticeably red and swollen and very sore. I couldn't see any puncture wounds in the split second I could get her to stay still.  I think the aloe vera has helped a bit because the swelling has gone down a bit and it's not quite so red.

I'll be booking her in to the vets tomorrow arvo now. 2 cats- 1 carrier. I feel like a soccer cat mum.

In the mean time I'm following your advice to the letter. This has been very helpful.

An update on Sugar's abscess. I kept putting aloe vera on her ear last night and this morning. I spoke to the vet when I dropped Spike off for his op and he said it definitely sounded like an abscess and I could take her in this arvo for a check and any treatment she might need.

The thing is, it was nearly gone by lunch time. It's not hot or swollen any more and the redness has shrunk. She let me press it to check for pain and though obviously it's still  a bit tender, it didn't bother her for me to touch it. The warm comprsses would have helped too. So thanks again for your advice you were spot on.

The vet said it's not necessary to start her on antibiotics if it's healing itself but to take her in if it starts to play up again. I reckon it'll be gone by tomorrow but we'll see.
