Hello, This is my first post here. I'm feeling quite desperate. My cat Sherlock has been sick for a little over two weeks now and I'm at a loss. He's the most sweet and affectionate cat I've ever met and lately he's wanted nothing to do with me, which of course adds to my anxiety about it all.

Thursday the 27th I got home from a work event, and my entire house smelled like vomit. He had puked multiple times in every room of the house. It was down to foam and bile. I called the emergency vet to see if they thought I should take him in and while I was on the phone with them, I watched him vomit and his entire body convulsed and he was screeching in pain. I'd never see anything like it, it was absolutely devastating :(

I took him to the ER that night. They did X-rays, a urinalysis and ultrasound of his kidneys. Everything checked out okay minus some struvite crystals in his urine. (He had urinary issues shortly after we got him 4 years ago, so I knew what to look for there and had seen no signs whatsoever) They assumed that he was straining to pee and that was what had caused the vomiting. I was sent home with famotidine, some sort of pain liquid, and a muscle relaxer in case he was straining to pee. They gave him an injection of Cerenia to stop the vomiting.

Turns out this wasn't the problem. He's been peeing with no trouble at all. There was another ER visit in there a couple days later because he hadn't peed yet (my theory was that he was off food and water, and stressed from the vet visit, turns out I was right). They thought he was obstructed, but he ended up peeing AT the vet with no problem. Thankfully we got to go home.

Fast forward to the following Wednesday. He's now off all the meds. He's acting like himself, super snuggly and affectionate, very happy. By mid-day he stops eating. By evening he's vomiting. Back to the ER. Another shot of Cerenia. Another physical exam where he checks out as fine. They didn't run any other diagnostics since everything was okay last time and we had an appointment with his daytime vet soon.

This time I'm given more cerenia in pill form to give him for the next two days, plus more famotidine. He's keeping food down but he's dry heaving and having stomach convulsions here and there still. Two days later, he's back to being sweet and affectionate and happy. Of course, I then have to take him to his regular vet for them to run the bloodwork and whatever else they need to do.

His visit went well but he's been very standoffish ever since. He's spending all of his time in the basement far away from me and I haven't heard him purr in 2 days. It's unlike him to hold a grudge about going to the vet for this long, and I don't know if I should consider it a symptom of his sickness, if he's just resting to recover, or if it's something else entirely. He's been acting very skittish and paranoid lately too. The smallest sounds will freak him out. This is a cat that has lived in a house with a neighbor who sets off fireworks year round for 5 years. Nothing phases him normally.

Long story short - We have no diagnosis. I'm scared to take him off the famotidine because I'm afraid he's just going to get sick again. And I just miss my buddy and I'm tired of being stressed and sad.

Hello breamarie42,

Sorry to hear your cat Sherlock is sick.  Is your cat on any of the topical flea medications or tablets (like Comfortis)?

It sounds like he is sick no doubt and the hiding and not being friendly is out of character for him.

It is difficult to know what the problem is.

I too recently lost my dear cat and she was poisoned by these flea medications being pushed on everyone.  She had lost the ability to purr or meow btw.   It was so very bizarre I cannot tell you!

Please let us know if this is a possible unsuspected culprit.

I hope you can find an answer.  Nothing is worse than having a sick cat and no idea as to what the problem is.

Take care of yourself during this stressful time.  It is not only very bad for you but bad for your beloved kitty as he knows how you feel, believe me.

Please keep us posted as well!

Thanks for the response. He wasn't on anything at all prior to this actually. I'm so sorry to hear about your cat, that's terrible :(

i assume they've checked your cat for pancreatitis?  our kitty (he's 17) has pancreatitis and IBS, and if he doesn't take pednisone twice a day, he vomits - sometimes quite a bit.  is it possible he has developed an allergy to one of his regular foods or that you recently changed foods?
