Little Bit had her first vaccines this past Tuesday at the clinic in our local pet shop.  Vet told us some signs to look for, including vomitting, fever, swollen face, etc. (I have a list).  She was totally fine till the wee late hours on Friday night, when we noticed her limping on back right leg, and she wanted to sleep more than normal.  Her appetite was a little less that day (some days she eats voraciously, some days not so much).

She did still jump on furnish, and she DID eat, just not as much.  Saturday came and same thing: limping on that leg, sleeping a LOT, half of what she normally eats on a good day --- but still a few periods of playing a bit, sort-of running, and jumping from furnish to furnish.

Did some poking around on the web and came across "limping kitten syndrome" in kittens after they have their first round of vaccines; specifically related to FCV.  I decided since it was the weekend, to just let her rest, make sure she ate SOME, and make her comfy (which means she spent almost the entiire day/night sleeping on my lap). Most pieces I've read on this say that it works itself out after a few days.  She *seems* a bit better today...but too early in the day for us to tell.  She did just now eat 3/4 of a 3 ozs can of food all at once -- which is good for her.

Anyone ever experience this with their kittens?  This is our first kitten that has not come already all vaxxed up, so we never had to deal with watching for any side effects.  I knew to watch for certain things, but I was looking at things what would have happened closer to the vaccine day, not a few days out.

Sorry so long, but I like to give details so as to give a good picture of what's going on.  I am now off to call the place that gave her the vaccine to ask some questions.

Kit's Mom now.

hmm...found a really old thread started by catwoman707 regarding this very thing...I feel better now that it's not anything dire.  This post has lots of looks, but no comments, so I will just keep watching  her and call my full vet tomorrow....the pet clinic and the emergency 24 hour vet say they've never heard of this, but I don't have a ton of trust in what they will tell you.

Just now noticed that it's moved to her front right -- another tell tale sign that it's the calicivirus/reaction the calicivirus vaccine.

So glad you found that old thread!

That was my first experience with the calici limping kitten virus, and since have seen it again, it has very classic symptoms, and the key is to continue getting the same amt of food and water in to her until she gets through this, bet tmrw morning she will be better or at least clearly well on her way :)

Thanks for the note!  Yep, I read through your entire ordeal with this running through your kitten group!  And although your case was indeed the actual virus, it was not a far leap to confirm that my Kit's symptoms are from getting a mild case due to the vaccine.  It sort of angers me that the professionals don't know of this ("we never heard of that before")....but glad I am intelligent enough to do some research and put 2 + 2 together.

Yes! Vets are disappointing when it comes to kittens unfortunately.

MLV vaccines are just that, modified live virus, if you worry about another reaction when her next is due, ask for the killed vaccine. Just as effective but takes about a week to become effective rather than the faster acting protection of the live (MLV) version.

Hmmm...she's supposed to go back on Aug 30 for the next round.  I am wondering if they do have the killed vaccine, but just automatically give live.  I will call and ask beforehand.  She seems to be perking up a bit, but the limp is now definitely moved to her front right.  She's eating decent today and just pestered the heck out of me for yogurt out of my bowl (plain, Greek), and happily licked about 4 finger-tips full.  Licking her lips and enjoying, perkily trying to get into my bowl :)

Well whaddya know....she's definitely on the rebound!! Went up for a shower, she was eating.  Came back down and she's bouncier than she has been since Friday night late.

So, it seems we are out of the woods, but I will still keep a watch on her :)

CRF at a year old???!

How sad.

Like my permanent foster who I adored Stella, stomach cancer at less than 3 yrs old.

What a shame...

So glad she is spunky and doing good!

I’m super happy to hear that someone else dealt with this. I’ve been doing so much research to make sure my little guy would be okay. We got him his FCV and rabies shots on the 26th and he was fine, and yesterday night on the 30th, we noticed him limping. He’s eating less but is still eating. Can you please tell me what happened to your kitty and how long it took to recover?
