had my barely 3 year old girl jensen at the vet cause she was dehydrated and drooling like no other. They gave her antibiotic shots and sub q fluids. Kept her two nights then sent her home telling me it was distemper and to give her antibiotics for 10 days. The first dose I tried got spit all over me. She wouldn't swallow at all and proceeded to sound like she was gagging. Took her to a second vet who started saying she was having an allergic reaction. Gave her steroid shots, lasics and more antibiotics. Kept her over night. Picked her up today the vet said she feels its FIP. The cats breathing shallow, is having a lot of trouble swallowing, looks like she has the sore throat to end all. No blood work was done. No xrays. She "didn't have time" but couldn't tell me that so I could take her to someone who had the time. She wanted me to either put her down or leave her at the office over the weekend. I took her home so she could be comfortable and not scared. Except for her eyes and nose being juicy she looks the same. Dont know what to do. Any advice would be so great .

You need to tell us why the vet or both mentioned fip, there must be a symptom that is pointing to it.

Is there tummy/chest fluid?

Fever?

How's her appetite?

Wow!  I'm so sorry you're going through this with your kitty. From they symptoms you've shared, I wouldn't suspect FIP.  I'd probably take her to the ER vet or on Monday get a 3rd opinion.

Sorry been rather hysterical most of the day.she had fluids in her lungs at the second vet which is the one who said FIP. Yet the first vet could have caused that by over hydrating her. Had that happen to another cat years ago. The second vet said the cat being skinny was another sign. Told her that her and her four sisters were all beyond skinny until they were fixed. (Her and two were fixed a month or so ago). She didn't have a fever at the first vet, but did have one initially at the second vet. But it went back to normal temp and was still okay when I picked her up. No testing was done for FIP.

Her initial symptoms really don't trigger any thoughts of fip at all.

Drooling by the way would be caused from nausea, or mouth/tooth pain, but being only 3 this is unlikely.

What really should be done now is to remove as much fluid out as possible, making her breathe MUCH easier, at least for the time being.

They can take some of the fluid and test it for content.

This will give them a better indication as to whether it is actually most likely to be fip (there is no definitive test for diagnosis)

FIP takes on various symptoms, but classics are fever of an unknown cause that does not respond to antibiotics, and in wet fip, fluid in tummy, or chest if tummy is full.

It's highly unusual for a cat to be overhydrated with sub-q fluids, a dehydrated cat will absorb the fluids quickly, any excess will be used for organs when needed.
