So I was pretty lucky when first getting my kitten, Tucker; a pet store was going out of business and all the pet food was on clearance. This allowed me to stock up on a some pretty decent quality food for a really good price. Except I may have bought way more dry kitten food than he'll need in his first year, especially since I go through it half as fast (I feed him about 50/50 wet and dry). He's only about 3.5 months now, but I've got 4.5 bags of the stuff
I just was curious about whether there would be any ill effects feeding him kitten food past his first year. I can't imagine it would need anything other than a bit of caution in how much I feed him, but since he's pretty active and I'm hoping to put him on a high protein food anyways, that's something I'm prepared for. However, if there's anything else I should be aware of it would be nice to know.

Thanks!

It's probably fine to feed the kitten food beyond a year, especially if it's only part of the diet and you adjust amounts to keep him at a good weight. But check the expiration dates on the bags. There is a surprising amount of bacteria in dry food and I wouldn't recommend feeding it past the expiration date. If you feel like you have more than you'll be able to use, I'm sure your local animal shelter would appreciate the donation.

I think it should be good expiration wise. Most of the bags go well into 2017, and I'm using the once that expire sooner than that first. But I'll definitely keep that in mind and watch the dates carefully. If I feel I'm not going to use it I'll definitely bring them into the shelter or Wildlife rehab I volunteer with. Thanks :)

Kitten food has more calories/nutrients/carbs than a normal adult cat needs since its formulated for kittens as they grow. Thus the only thing you really need to worry about is watching his weight and making sure he doesn't get overweight. Weigh him every so often and you should be okay. Once you run out though I'd suggest getting adult cat food or all stages cat food.

luckily I do know how to check body condition in cats, so I'm not too worried about watching his weight. Buy yes, once I'm out I'll be switching. I just overestimated how much I'd use, haha
