Hey guys how do you know if your cat has a fever. He's really warm right now, warmer than usual. He has been sleeping alot to and eating less. He also has an abscess on his face which is open and the puss is coming out. He got this abscess cause he got into a fight with another cst that isn't mine. The other cat bit him like 2times on his neck and the side of his face. Could this abscess be causing the fever? He has had a few abscesses before and all of them healed the same way. He opens them or i do it for him and the puss comes out, i put some alcohol on it and when all the puss is out it'll start to heal. Even when he had those abscesses he didn't catch a fever. Should i be worried?

If your cat has an infection from the bites he needs antibiotics. Treating the fever won't help.

Is there a vet ER in your area? They're open on weekends when most vet offices are closed. Call your regular vet and listen to the after hours voicemail message. It should tell you who to call for emergencies. Give that number a call and talk to a vet about the abscess. It sounds like the abscess needs to be treated right away before it gets infected.

When your cat has a fever, he is warmer than usual or maybe feels hotter to the touch. Not sure if the abscess is giving him the fever.
For the abscess due to the wounds in the fight, I'll take no chances but to bring him to the vet and get it treated to prevent infections and make it a long process to heal.

Can someone else take him tomorrow?  Or can you find a way to take him?  This really shouldn't wait three days.

What can you give a cat when he has a fever?
I am a human doctor, not a cat doctor and any advice that I give you about cats should be checked with a veterinarian.    A fever is always associated with an elevated temperature and this is the body's attempt to fight an infection.  It is this infection, whether bacterial or viral and not the fever, that usually needs to be treated.

From your description it is possible that the abscess is the cause of the fever in your cat and this should be treated by your vet, possibly with an antibiotic but not necessarily so - and any decision to give an antibiotic to a cat can only be made by a veterinarian.  There is a general rule, in both human and in feline surgery that when there is pus it should be let out.  However opening an abscess can be most painful and again, in both human or felines, this procedure should only be performed by a health professional in order to reduce pain as much as possible and to avoid making the infection worse.

Incidentally the only sure way to diagnose a fever is to take the temperature with a thermometer as a fever does not exist with a normal temperature.  Elevated temperatures are diagnosed by placing the thermometer under the tongue in humans and in the rectum in cats.  Do not mix these up

BTW. When a human has a fever the symptoms include malaise with muscle aching and headache, but a cat cannot complain of these.  However cats do present with drowsiness and this, with an elevated temperature, may be the only way that a cat can let you know that it is ill.

With best wishes,

Geoffrey
