Hello There,

My 13 years old cat has hit a little odd times with his appetite lately. He was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few years back, and we've been giving him 5mg of methimazole daily. About a month ago he started to eat less and lose weight. The vet upped his methimazole to 5mg 1/2 a day. His appetite diminished, and we were advised to drop down dosage to 1/2 of 5mg pill.

He's still not eating very much. Just nibbles and disappointment.

We are waiting on the newest dosage from the vet.

We have been mixing with water and administering into his mouth nightly and he does not like it one bit! He used to just eat it with wet food....

So my question is: Has anyone started using the transdermal version of methimazole? What is the dosage about per ml that would be equivalent to a 5mg pill? Does anyone know about pricing, or have any website pharmacy suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your replies. Hopefully this wasn't confusing. I'm a little worried about our kitty!

Your Vet should determine the dosage, and will have to write out a prescription for the pharmacy for a transdermal gel for this drug.  I have not personally used THIS medication in the gel form, but have used others, and use Roadrunner Pharmacy for my compounding needs.  They happen to be located in the same metropolitan area that I am, but that doesn't really matter.  They ship all over the U.S.   Here's their website:  https://www.roadrunnerpharmacy.com/
