Anybody have experience with using prescribed laxatives from  a vet.

My vet indicated that it's unpleasant.  Does that mean the cat will be

pooping all over with no control to relieve in a litter box.  Right now

I'm monitoring my Baby Brucie before calling the vet for a followup

of what he would like to do for this constipation problem.  Look forward

to hearing from you.  A Concerned Feline Owner For A Special Rescue.

I've never had to use prescribed laxatives on any of mine, but my elderly girl that passed not long ago was on Miralax daily for over a year.  She had some issues anyway, but my older guy now has to have a dose here and there.  He never has any issues with it.

I'd be prepared for anything if I were you!  It may end up being a colon cleanse for the poor guy!  With Fuzz, my elderly girl, we reverted to confining her and using puppy training pads, if it gets to that point when the meds hit Brucie, you might consider having some on hand.  They are a lifesaver!  I keep them now for those "just in case" situations with the cats.  Good luck, Brucie is beautiful!!!!

Never had to use a prescription laxative. The vet recommended Miralax for Buster and he's been on it for years. It has helped him greatly and he has had no issues with constipation since he started taking it.

I only used canned pumpkin for constipation. no sugar or spices-its in the baking lane of the grocery store.

I also used miralax but not usually together.

Only on stubborn cases of constipation did I need to use them together.

some cats like the taste of pumpkin and some don't. you can have them lick it off your finger or add to wet food.

the dose for miralax is based on what the vet recommends.

Foxxycat:  Thanks for the feedback.  Was canned pumpkin okay with the vet.

What results to expect  with the pumpkin and how long does it take for a

bowel movement.

Yes, in my case, my vet gave me the amount of Miralax to give to my two cats, and each was a different dosage.  Definitely go by what your vet says.

@foxxycat   Did your cat like the pumpkin?  I gave my elderly dog this before he passed away and he loved it, he thought it was a treat and would beg for it, but Wurp won't touch it!

Haven't tried the canned pumpkin yet.  Right now I'm still at the wait and see stage.

Can you kindly share the brand.  Important not to use canned pumpkin pie filling.

I used the Libby's brand, and it just says 100% Pure Pumpkin, Max (my old dog) absolutely thought he was getting goodies when I gave it to him.  My cats won't get anywhere near it.  I'm hoping foxxxycat used a different brand that maybe mine will eat.  I'm sure that is wishful thinking, I guess all plain pumpkin tastes the same, but I'd love to get Wurp off of the Miralax and on to something natural.

Libby's was all I saw at the store though that wasn't the pie filling type.

Libby's does make the pumpkin pie filling too though...but they are clearly labeled, you can easily tell the difference.

hbunny:  Thanks for the helpful info.  Baby Brucie's Poop update:  He finally

did a normal bowel movement this afternoon.  Appetite is doing well.  Good

signs of a recovery.

If you're in the US, LIbby's is a popular brand of canned 100% pumpkin:

A store generic brand will also work as long as it is 100% pure pumpkin.

Weruva makes a pumpkin supplement for cats and dogs: http://weruva.com/pumpkin-patch-up.php The 3 oz pouch really doesn't have much pumpkin inside and it costs over $1. If you think you may need to give pumpkin on a regular basis or per the vet's instructions, it makes more sense to buy a can of pumpkin from the supermarket. You can freeze the canned pumpkin in silicone ice cube trays and pop the frozen cubes into a baggie for easier storage and later use.

Miralax or generic equvalent (double check generics for any flavorings and other ingedients which you do not want to give to a cat) works great for constipation. Dosage varies so ask your vet what the ideal dose would be for your cat and how many times daily and for how many days. I've never given more than 1/8 teaspoon twice a day for no more than two days. The most important thing to know when using Miralax or equivalent is to mix the dry powder into water first for a minute or two and then mix it into canned food.  A spoonful or two of water is plenty. This will prevent the medicine from dehydrating the body and possibly make the constipation worse.

1/4 tsp. Miralax daily is his current dose. That is to maintain everything. I know in the beginning it was a higher dose - maybe 3/4 tsp. It was so long ago I really don't remember. I would think it would also vary depending on how much your cat weighs. Also keep in mind that liquids are very important to keep things moving so whatever you can do to get kitty to drink more is a good idea.

LTS3:  Thanks for taking the time for the helpful info.  Info online indicates a dosage of 1/2 teaspoon (pumpkin) to start and increase

to one or two teaspoons if necessary.  Results within hours.  Would you agree with this.

weebeasties:  Thanks for the helpful info.  If I decide to use the Miralax, will check with the

vet for proper dosage.  You're so right about the kitties drinking more to avoid constipation.

yes each cat is different-re the pumpkin. usually in 12 hours I saw results. Pumpkin face my oldest now-she only needs two dabs of pumpkin on her roof of her mouth to get results=it was like 1/4 tsp. my angel Floey needed 1 teaspoon to get results. my Honeybee who is my profile pic-LOVES LOVES pumpkin. She licks it off my finger. I have to be careful where I feed her because she splatters when she eats so I usually feed it on the porch so if it goes flying the rain will take care of it.

Happy to say, all is back to normal with Baby Brucie.  Did not have to

use any of the alternatives which were helpful and would have used them

if needed to give him some relief.  Back to having normal bowel movements.

That's A Ten Four

P.S:  Baby Brucie thanks everyone online
