Two nights ago, my fiance saw a post on Facebook that someone who goes to his school found 2 small kittens. Gorgeous looking ginger boys - extremely young. Ears still folded, eyes closed. She was asking if any of her friends could help as she wasn't able to care for them.
Cutting to the chase, I got in touch with her and she told me she had found someone that was home all day to take them. In between, I had already gotten in touch with my rescue contact who said she could take them. She reiterated info to me to give them about feeding and keeping them warm, oh and how they have to help them eliminate.
Long story short. 2 days later (today) I get frantic messages that the person who has them is completely overwhelmed with their care. Even though she had brought them to a vet for a look over, one already has died. The other has worms and she thought she could just p/u stuff from Petsmart for the kitten.Ugh.
After many back and forth texts, phone calls and such, I think I finally managed to make them all realize that having my rescue friend come and pick up the kitten ASAP was the most prudent thing to do. She kept insisting she wanted to keep the kitten but her friend, at my urging, was able to make her understand that it's best if she hands him over.
My entire morning at work has been sucked up with trying to help coordinate all of this. As of now, I believe that everyone has managed to get in touch with each other and hopefully, my rescue contact is on her way to p/u the remaining kitten. Luckily they only live about 15 minutes from each other.
I'm stressed. I wish that first night they all had listened to me. I had offered to come and get them and while I'm no expert, I knew with the help of TCS members I'd be able to manage until the next morning when the rescue would have stepped in. I know hindsight is 20/20, so no use in beating myself up but I do feel quite sad over this. I posted a message on Facebook to all my contacts how difficult it is to care for neonatel kitties, and that unless they have experience they should get in touch with someone who can handle it.
In the meantime, I offered to financially help with the care of this kitten if he makes it.
