My wife and I have a 12+ year old male -BC who was neutered and released back to a colony on a farm back in 2004. The foreman at the farm was supposedly abusing the cats, so a friend re-trapped him last fall and we agreed to see if we could socialize him.

We have a old Chihuahua who likes cats, A 14 year old orange tabby female - Sandy , a 3 year old male gray tabby - Bailey, a 10 year old female tuxedo -Sister, and a 5 year old male tuxedo -Smudge, all neutered.

He had the run of the bathroom for 4 months, and stayed mainly in a padded cube, where he would let us pet him and give him medications, but never trusted us. Three months ago, we started leaving the door open, and he has made friends with our  tabbies , but does not like either of our tuxedos. All went well for over a month, he was sleeping on my bed and would take treats out of my hand, but still pretty fearful, staying under the bed much of the day. A month or so ago, he pooped on the bed, and  it seems to have been a one time occurrence . Unfortunately he's peed on the bed 4 or 5 times on the last 3 weeks and we are at a loss as what to do next. Any suggestions to keep him using the litter box all of the time? We have considered letting him go back to living outside, but we have lost a number of pets to the road over the years.

We are wondering if a natural stress reliever like L-Theanine (recommended by Jackson Galaxy) would help him to become less fearful.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It's possible he may have a urinary tract infection--that will cause a cat to lose control of his bladder. Is it possible to get him to a vet to get checked out? Others will be along soon to give suggestions about relaxation remedies.

Definitely check for UTI to rule that out first.  If it's not a UTI, it could be a territory marking situation or anxiety.  He could be marking the bed as his or peeing there to have the comfort of his scent.

You can try covering the bed in plastic.  I have used old shower curtain liners.  I then usually put a dish of food there as cats don't like to eat and potty in the same area.

Be sure the bedding is washing in a enzyme based cleaner.  You may think it's clean, but a cat may still smell it.  I had to dispose of lots of comforters when I had a cat that did this for awhile.

Changed bedding, and seems to be working so far. Any recommendations for an enzyme based cleaner? Conflicting claims are confusing.
