Saturday, my baby brucie stopped eating, no appetite for no apparent

reason that I could think of at the time.  I realized something was wrong

when I offered him his favorite evening treat that he never refuses and

refused it.  Decided to monitor before overreacting.  Tried different things

like giving him a different brand dry food which he did nibble a little.

Then some wet food, again nibble a little and finally a little bit of

tuna fish, nibbled a little.  Was still urinating, but no bowel movement.

By Monday morning a decision was made to bring him to the vet for

physical evaluation, X-rays, blood tests.  X-rays showed all internal

organs are healthy with no issues.  Shows enough feces that would

cause constipation.  Blood tests are all good, no issues.  The vet

prescribed Cat Lax instead of a laxative.  Cat Lax is a gel for hair balls

which Baby Brucie doesn't have a problem with.  The vet indicated

that the Cat Lax will act as a lubricant to make it easy for Baby Brucie

to relieve himself.  Was also prescribed a A/D wet food which he's

been eating and is also beginning to eat his normal dry food.  The

vet mentioned offering Baby food (chicken, beef).

Question:  Anybody giving their kitty(s) baby food.  What is the best

brand to consider.

Thanks for reading and look forward to hearing from you.

Any plain meat baby food that doesn't contain onions or garlic.  Some people seem to be of the opinion that Beech Nut is the best but I don't remember the reason why.  If your kitty is eating the A/D I would stick with that until he gets back to eating his regular food.  Baby food is fine short term if that is all that kitty will eat but the A/D is actually a better choice if he is eating that.

These are the safe baby foods to temporarily feed a cat: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/225595/anyone-else-have-an-only-gravy-licker/60#post_3749885 A little bit mixed into the A/D will help your cat to keep eating until he's feeling better. Being constipated can be pretty uncomfortable.

What do you normally feed? Dry food can cause constipation in some cats because of the lack of water. Many cats don't drink enough water from a bowl to meet their needs. If you can add some canned food to the diet that would help.

Thanks for the response LTS3.  Baby Brucie is a Dry Food type of kitty

and was doing well with it.  Seem to be drinking enough water.  He is

eating the prescribed A/D wet food and just want to see him pooping

again normally.  He hasn't had a movement since 9:30 PM Monday

and it is now Tuesday.

Denice:  Thanks for responding.  Will stay with the A/D being that he's

eating it.  The alternative from the vet was baby food if the A/D was

being turned away, but he seems to be doing okay with the A/D and

he's also eating his regular dry food and water.  Just waiting for another

bowel movement which was a good sign on Monday, but hasn't had

another.  Normally he was have two movements daily.

We feed our cat Gerber Chicken and Gravy baby food. One of the few meat based options that is free of garlic or onions.

Slufferk:  We're on the same product page.  Just bought a small jar of Gerber Chicken & Gravy

with no onions or garlic.  Do you feed your kitty daily with the baby food.  What about dry food.

Baby Brucie is eating the prescribed A/D from the vet.  His appetite is coming back, but no

bowel movement since Monday.  X-rays showed he's clogged up with feces, the doc said he's

seen worse.  Baby Brucie still has plenty of playful energy, not in any kind of pain or uncomfortable,

just waiting for poop to start again.  Drinking water, peeing.  Doctor doesn't want to do a laxative

right now, briefly mention that it's unpleasant.  Using a prescribed gel for hairballs that will lubricant

when he starts relieving himself.  Thanks for responding.

Honeybee on my lap, music playing in background
you can try a few things to get bowels moving.

plain canned pumpkin=its just the pumpkin nothing else= 1/2 to 1 teaspoon daily to keep bowels moving-it has fiber and water=this works like a charm with my cats. my cats are kibble queens and often don't get enough water to push the turds through. I give this every evening. usually the next morning I get a nice steamy pile in the cat box. my cats do well with this every other day. you can see if your kitty will lick it off your finger.

I suggest putting a 1/4 cup of the pumpkin in a small dish and adding water-mash with fork until its like a pudding=this will make it splatter less when they lap at it. you can dip your finger in it and it sticks to the finger well enough to get them to lick it. you have to play around with how much will work. one of my cats pumpkin face only needs 1/8 teaspoon and she gives me poop the next 12 hours. my angel cat Floey it took 24 to 36 hours to work for her but she always struggled with constipation all her life. My Honeybee-it seems to take about 18 hours to work-I found giving every other day was perfect once you get the bowels moving.

It also works for diarrhea. not sure why but it helps both conditions. Pumps hates canned pumpkin and she is submissive so I put it on my finger and swipe her roof of the mouth with a tiny bit-she gets mad but purrs a few minutes after I put it in her mouth. my Angel Floey used to growl and claw but I could usually get her to lick her nose if I put a tiny spot on her nose/lip area then she would lick it on her own but not for long. Honeybee eats it eagerly.

try this and see if it helps

You can ask the vet about: Miralax

This is also something I have used with success-when mixing-remember you have to dissolve the beads before you put in food otherwise it doesn't work. I use a small medicine clear cap like a cough syrup cap=put hot water-just enough-and beads then mix with my finger until they dissolve=then add to wet food. your vet can tell you how much to use. this takes a bit longer to work than pumpkin but you can try this as well.

Sorry for the delay in editing-got distracted!

Also any moisture you can get into your kitty will help with constipation-adding wet food to the diet will really help. anything-moist treats instead of crunchy ones. cooked chicken for treats-no bones. anything that adds water to the digestive tract.

Cats are notorious desert like creatures and don't drink water like you and I  do so we have to figure out how to sneak it into their diet.

Happy to say, Baby Brucie is back to normal.  Appetite is good, normal bowel movements,

normal urine relief.  Loves his Gerber Chicken/gravy baby food and his normal dry

food.  Time to relax and enjoy my Special Baby Brucie.  Thank you everyone in this

community for the helpful natural alternatives.

P.S:  Baby Brucie thanks you to

That's A Ten Four
