Are Pet Stores Bad?

Alright ya'll i found this article. I mean if it's true that pet shops do this, shouldn't it be illegal? This is the article:

Why it's better to adopt a pet..

If you and your family decide to bring an animal into your home, adopt one (or two). Don’t buy one from a pet store. That way you can save a homeless animal from death and your money won’t be used to support the dog and cat population explosion. The goal of the pet shops is to make money so animals in them are often treated as just another "item" to be sold.

Many of the puppies in pet shops come from puppy mills. These are places where sad, lonely dogs live in small cages under awful conditions and are forced to give birth to puppies over and over again. After about five or six years, the dogs in the puppy mills don’t have enough puppies so they’re killed. If people didn’t buy puppies from pet shops, then the puppy mills would go out of business and the dogs in shelters would find good homes instead of being killed.

When you are ready to adopt an animal, don’t overlook the ones who may not seem "cute" to other people. These need just as much love as any others and will give you much love and appreciation in return.

When your friends tell you they want to buy a fancy, pedigree dog or cat, tell them about all the homeless animals who are waiting to be adopted. The dogs and cats in shelters are just as nice as the dogs in pet shops. Shelters even have many of the same pedigree dogs and cats as pet stores. There are also many rescue groups for purebreds, so if people want a specific kind of dog or cat they can always adopt one from the rescue group.

Take a look at this thread currently on the IMO forum:

I certainly prefer to buy supplies in pet stores that don't sell puppies and kittens, though I have to admit that I've never even seen one that doesn't at least sell rodents, fish, birds and reptiles. Puppy and kitten mills must be discouraged, but I doubt that an outright ban is feasible in most areas.

I still don't get why they can't just stop the breeders who have puppy mills they should be arrested(just like the others who had abused their pets) cuz they kill dogs

We bought Doku from one of these types of pet stores, they were later shut down, the dogs were poorly taken care of 3 or 4 put in tiny windown boxes, we only bought her from them because she was only 2 weeks old, they tried to lie and said she was 2 months. We have had cats our whole life so it is hard to decieve us about a kittens age. I knew that we could take care of her the correct way, since she still needed kitten milk. I didn't know who else would end up with her and wanted her to be safe. I am guessing she was around 2 weeks, she was very tiny, big round head, itty bitty ears, could barely walk, eyes just opening. Here is a picture of her from that age...Many of these pet shops have been shut down all around us.

This was discussed a few weeks ago. Fortunately here in the UK their cutting down on the petshops selling pets.

I had a hard job trying to find a kitten, and it was pure luck after a lot of phone calls to pet shops, and even rescue centres to find one.

Then i found Rosie.

I agree that pet shops should be stopped, as i mentioned it is being phased out over here. But if i had'nt bought Rosie, and if no one else bought her, where would she have ended up?, in a shelter, because they don't stay kittens in the pet shops forever!.

Just look at that cute, mischevious little face on the left. Theres no way i could have left her in the shop!

Just wanted to add this thought to the mix...

A local pet store once took in an abandoned kitten that I found in a local park several years ago, when I was unable to get him into a shelter. They told me that they get all of their kittens that way, and were happy to help find them homes. They saw no reason to buy kittens to sell when so many strays need homes.

I hope that many pet stores are like that, but can't say b/c that's the only one I ever had experience with.

Puppies, on the other hand...were another matter. Everyone seems to want a purebred.

This is more or less what the pet store I got Jeepers from does. They take in litters of unwanted kittens, they do not pay for ANY of these kittens.

As I have previously stated in another thread (can't find it offhand), in a perfect world there would be no unwanted kittens and all pets would be 'fixed', but this is not a perfect world and I would prefer the unwanted kittens around here to be given to the pet shop where they at least have a chance of a good home and being 'fixed' than to leave them to have litters of their own and make the problem worse.

I had every intention of going to a shelter to get a cat but when I went to the pet store to get supplies there she was..... I couldn't leave her behind.

Thats exactly what i said Rhian. When i look at Rosie, i often wonder if someone else had taken her, would she be as spoilt and smothered with love as she is now?.

She could be in a loving home with someone, but then again?. A horrible thought.
