Hi everyone, I am new here and looking for some advice from those of you who have been in similar situations.
I have a 16 y/o cat, Boobert, who recently stopped eating. We brought him to the vet and she felt a mass in his stomach. She was unsure if it was stool or a mass so we did X-rays and will get the results back tomorrow. However, he has had very watery diarrhea since so I believe it is likely a mass. I asked what would happen next, and she discussed options for surgery, or supportive care for the time he has left. She gave him subq fluids, mirtazapine, and an anti-nausea injection but he still isn't eating. He spent much of the night hiding in the basement but came up at 6am on his own, had a few licks of cat food, and has spent much of the day in the basement.
Given he has kidney disease, is FIV positive, and not eating on his own, I can't imagine putting him through surgery. Given cats tend to hide when they know it's their time, I'm wondering if that's what he is doing, or if he's just tired and wants someplace quiet. He still purs when I hold him, but does seem tired and not himself. I guess I'm just having a hard time determining if he's suffering or not, and what my next step should be.

Ah, Darlin, that is so rough.  The best advice I can give you is to listen to your cat and your gut.  They, the cats, generally tell us when it is time, if we will listen closely with our hearts.  When life is no longer a joy, and they are just too tired to really care.  Then we have to Make The Hard Decision for them.  Would that someone could do that for me, someday.  Just...watch him.  If he lies all squiched up and purrs, that may be a pain purr.  It has a different quality than a happy purr.  There will be more people answering you, with wonderful advice, but I wanted to make sure you know that you are not alone here.

Shannon, I'm so sorry. This is a difficult time. I know when animals are sick they sometimes "hide" because of their flight or fight instinct of protecting themselves. Sending good thoughts your way. In a similar boat and it's so very sad.
