My hyper interactive kitten who just yesterday was running circles to wake me up at 6am woke me up with a raspy meow this morning. I gave her a tiny Dab coconut oil incase it was a hairball. This usually works for my older cats. But I realized after she started purring she sounded mucusy. No runny nose no icky eyes. She is more than happy to try and steal my food. Though every time she drinks liquid she chokes and coughs. What on earth could this be. I'm watching her for 24 hours to see if she gets worse or better before runing to the vet. I've treated many things at home with my cats but this weird coughing symptom has me stumped.

P.s purring seems to help her loosen w.e is in there and after a few minutes of purring the mucus noise goes away. So seems to be in throat more than lungs?

Yes, I too suspect this is something with the throat, as she gets difficulties with drinking...

I think you must visit the vet, and let the vet take a look inside...  Begin with phoning if you wish, if your vet answers telephone questions.

I'm thiking throat too. Going to have husband hold her still while I check for sores. If I see nothing or if I do I'll call the vet.but having a little more detail into what it is helps me trouble shoot ideas with my vet. She let's me more holistic with my pets care instead of jumping to medications. Which killed one of my last cats. Her body didn't responsed well

I would get her to a vet right away.
local vet here won't take immediate appointments. And the animal hospital charges $500 just for walking in there door. As I said she's eating fine. Wet food fine. Water IDK she coughs. No pain or meowing. I'm waiting until morning to decide to make an appointment. If she wasn't eating or pottying or in pain I'd call asap but she seems okay other than the cough[emoji]128542[/emoji]

No I have not. I didn't think to do that since I have her quarantined in the office away from my other cats. The bathroom has the kitty box. I'll try that. Also Anyone have any ideas how to make her drink. I'm string feeding her watered down food. And I also have kitten formula on hand. But she refuses to even swallow but a tiny bit.

P.s apparently it helped she napped with my husband a few hrs woke up pottied immediately was hungry and scarfed down half a can Of wet food then happily mucusy purred in circles rubing on us. She's still quarantined. I'm reminded husband to wash up after touching her. But she's acting much much better. She still has no runny nose or icky eyes. The kittens who she was playing with before I caught onto her being sick have no symptoms either. But I'm keeping her separated for now. I don't need a bunch of sick kitties

Yay this morning she is doing much better. Her meow is still raspy but louder. And she's way more active. A bit needy but I'm needy to when sick. Husband thinks this might be like the time she sprained her ankle but had us and the vet fooled that it was broken until the X-ray's said otherwise(she would cry and tremble when it was touched) I've had cats with colds never ra cough though still worry me. But it isn't as deep and she doesn't choke when she drinks water anymore. Appetite is back. Vet told me to just watch her for now.

Watch that it does not turn into pneumonia. That will take a kitten down fast.

Yes that's what I'm watching for. Her cough has lightened up. And it's not in her chest but upper throat. I've checked with a stethoscope a few times already to make sure. But she's hyper and playful again. Which is a hugggggggggeee improvement from yesterday.

I'm starting to Think either it's kennel cough. Because from what I read cats can be carriers for life and my oldest had it as a kitten. Or she has asthma/allergy? IDK. Even my vet finds kennel cough to be a bit odd anther age to go from sick groggy tired to now happy running around talking and eating. Besides her poo being softer than normal she has no diarrhea and is peeing. Her mucusyness is going away but if it is kennel cough she can't leave this room for quite some time being the other kittens I have are very young. But if she did catch it from my oldest being a carrier why has no one else? All very odd. I did a web chat with my vet she says Luna is being pretty active and doesn't need treatment unless she is getting worse which she is doing the exact opposite which is why I'm so darn confused. I've never seen a cat do this with any kind of cold or anything. They usually get sicker and end up with mucusy snot by day 3. Despite random cough which reminds me of my aunts border collie who's like 14 and randomly hacks there is nothing wrong with her. Not even activity wise anymore.

It could be a virus, but to be on the safe side, she should have clavamox for 7-10 days. After about 3 days she should be able to return to the litter.

I set up a vet appointment for this Friday. If she gets worse I'll go sooner but she's very active now. She has tried several times to Convnce me she snot sick and wants out to pkay with the younger kittens. At which I laugh and say no. Husband has been sleeping in the office with her on the couch. Me being very pregnant this is awesome because I get a whole bed. She's potties like normal and her Appetite is up. She's been getting wet food. Her breathing is back to normal. But cough remains. Like I said before purring helps it go away so she's been getting lots of love and attentions. Her meow is back but occasionally it gives out to a raspy meow. In three days this is actually amazing progress for a kitten. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Get her wormed on Friday too.

Believe it or not, worms can cause a cough in kittens too.

It's nice of your husband to sleep with her! [emoji]128522[/emoji]

I was thinking that too. I'm trying to get around using the dewormed from the vet. Last time it was used it made her very sick puking and diarrhea and she was very angry about it. Anyone know an I'll vet the counter or a petmeds brand I can buy? My vet saw no worms but offered to deworm her. I'm hesitation because they only carry one brand and it made her sick before

Vet said no mucus in lungs it's just her throat. She offered me basically kitty cat version of cough syrup I took. Blodwork came back negative on any infections. She offered the dewormer but as I said I'm scared to give it to her since last tike it made her sick. Her cough is gone only happens when she meows. Or purrs very hard. Vet said she only eve seen this in older cats from hairball issues. So I'm also getting hairball stuff just in case.

Basically we Still have no clue what's wrong. She's active and hyper and playful normal kitten attitude so I'm completely lost of what to do other than give her cough syrup vet gave me which is not an antibiotics it's just to coat her throat to loseen anything [emoji]128542[/emoji]
