There seems to be some disagreement about distemper shots, even on this site. I'm interested in what people think, as I will take my newly adopted shelter kitties to "meet the vet" and presumably have their 3 week Felo Vax booster. They are approx. 10 months and 1 yr of age. Their history is known since they came from a home with just way too many cats because of failure to spay and neuter. They had never seen a vet prior to their arrival at the humane society July 9.
They have been spay/neutered, rec'd worm + flea meds, rabies vaccine, and first Felo Vax. I was instructed to take them to my vet for a Felo Vax or distemper booster, but opinions seem to vary on that. Does an adolescent cat need a 3 week booster, and then another booster a year after that? That is what my vet will want to do, as she has done with my cats in the past and I didn't know any better. The only time she didn't insist on this was when my kitty Vivian (2004-2015) was sick with IBD and other chronic illnesses and I didn't want to give her any vaccines. I ask because those vaccines are not without potentially serious side effects, and it all costs $$, which I am more than willing to spend for worthy causes. FYI: the whole family of cats, including three or four adolescent - adult litters, was at the shelter and the sibling of my 10 month old was still nursing from Mama, but I did not observe the one I adopted doing this (it was really odd, the kid was as big as the mom).
thanks
Laura
