Goodbye July.  It has been SO hot here; but I'm not quite ready to give up summer and this last bit of time before our next school year starts.  It's been nice having this down time with my kiddos. But they are starting to bicker a lot (it's been too hot to go outside much) so getting back to a normal routine might be what we all need!

When you were a child; what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a doctor.  Except for the phase in my early elementary years where I wanted to be a lunch lady because they got to go around and use the plastic knives to cut our meat in the lunch room.  I loved whatever it was supposed to be; but now I have NO idea what it was we were eating!

But mostly I wanted to be a doctor.  I did start college as a nursing student.  But I decided I didn't have the patience for people that job would require. Working retail proved that I guess.

Apparently, when I was about 3 years old I told my Grandma I wanted to be a stripper when I grew up.

I have no memory of that, I swear.

I remember I wanted to be a marine biologist because I loved the idea of working with dolphins. I also wanted to be a vet or to work with horses. When I got to about 12 years old I started doing pottery at school and decided that was my calling. I loved working with clay. Sadly it was not to be. I went to art college and studied ceramics, had a few pieces in local craft shops and exhibitions, even rented some studio space and sold the things I made for a while.

But it's so difficult to make any money out of. I could never get above the "paying hobby" stage.

Gosh, I can't believe we're in August already!

When I was little, I wanted to be a lawyer. My father always said I'd make a very good one.....I had an argument for everything.
Sometimes I even managed to argue my case for not being grounded and win. Other times, not so much. But even so, I'd manage to get time off for good behavior.

I think I wanted to be a writer when I was 8 or 9. At 10/11 I discovered the joys of horses, and that pretty much became my obsession from that point on, and I wanted to work with horses in some way. Music and horses were neck and neck for a long time - certainly from maybe 12/13 onwards.

What did I end up doing? I'm now a cleaner, and make and sell jewellery as a hobby - how things change :lol3:

I wanted to be a dress designer. I sewed clothes for my baby doll using scraps my grandmother gave me. I used a needle and thread. Also I cut out a lot of paper dolls. When I had extra paper and crayons, I traced out their forms and made them dresses, skirts, blouses, hats etc. I loved fashion. When I had my baby girl, I made her ruffled sun suits, dresses, later on blouses skirts, etc. I just loved designing and sewing. I would take dresses that given to me and remake them to fit my small body. I did that from necessity. Needless to say, I love being able now to just buy myself a new dress. :lol3:

Oh my.. I had so many desired careers:

First I wanted to be a doctor; then a teacher; then it was kind of back to doctor, until I think I heard that girls were supposed to be nurses; so I went into the nurse phase; then it was back into teaching when I found out about blood and cleaning up vomit and bedpans...yuck...

I was about to start applying to colleges for teaching.. I did take the PSAT, and SAT. I had that sent to a college for teaching. When it was time to apply, I changed my mind again....crazy--I did not think I had the grades for a full scholarship; parents could not afford to donate anything. I also felt that I would not be able to mange a classroom full of kids.

It was at this time in my life, I was working as an assistant bookkeeper in a newspaper distribution office, after school and on Saturdays.. I came into contact with a really smart woman--the bosses daughter who worked week-ends and was a few years older than me. She felt me vacillating. She was going to college for Medical Technology. She brought in all her booklets, books about deciding what type of career I may want.

I finally decided on being and x-ray tech.. so that is what I did for a total of 7 years, after a 2 year certificate program. I later got bored with that, going back to school for Diagnostic Ultrasound. I attended a 2 year community college program with an Associates Degree in Sonography.

I did that for over 30 years, finally deciding to switch from general ultrasound to specializing in Maternal-Fetal-Medicine..and that was it...

So I guess I kind of ended up with the first kind of career choice, doctor...I worked in a couple of Boston Teaching Hospitals, so I kind of also taught/trained both students of ultrasound and Resident/Fellows who would eventually become doctors....it all ended up in a circle..the circle of life....

One of my cousins just graduated with her associates in diagnostic ultrasound after teaching Kindergarten for 5 years I think. She jokes about having things backwards; getting her associates after her bachelors. :lol3:

My mother told me that I informed a very rigid great-aunt that I wanted to get a Greyhound bus and 6 VW Beetles and raise vans.  That sounds about right.  I was always a touch off.

There is a fly on my computer screen.  Was.  There was.  There is now a dead fly on my table.  I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR!

Had quite a few too...

- Opera Singer. I cannot sing worth ding dongs today.

- Doctor, specifically a Urologist (Thanks to my own medical history and personal experience) but where I live, I was required to fulfill a lot of math courses during High School and University. Like incredibly advanced stuff. I'm terrible at math. Even my own Great Uncle, who was a gifted oncologist, told me he likely never would have been able to be a doctor today due in part to so many math requirements.

- Ballerina. Thankfully that part is good
Unfortunately it was a difficult road via my family, who believed in all the silly and awful ballet stereotypes and refused to let me take classes. It wasn't until I was able to pay for it myself with my own money thanks to chores and jobs. At least now they are my biggest fans! And became huge lovers and supporters of ballet and dance overall.

- Historian. Got my History Degree, so good there too!

- University Professor

- Archaeologist

- Olympic Equestrian. Not one of those yet but I still have my horsey.

- Host for a travelling show, like Lonely Planet/Globe Trekker. Advise people about amazing locations both famous and obscure, safety concerns and tips etc It was one of the shows I loved as a kid, with a passion for travelling. Well, I'm not a host, but I'm still travelling. Can't go wrong!

- Librarian

- Poet. Though I knew even at a young age that being a real professional poet in today's world would be very difficult.

- Actress

Yeesh my head and imagination was busy...

I've always dreamed I'd work for Walt Disney, creating cartoons by hand. Yes.. by hand and not computers. My dreams dashed when I found out it became all computer generated.

I stayed in the art field and became a graphic designer though.

My two close friends had the exact same dream! Working for WD and drawing cartoons by hand - oh it sounded so lovely, such an admirable skill too. Indeed, too bad that has changed :/

I hope they've found a job to encourage their creativity!
