I know that there is a seperate sub forum for the devotees of raw food and home made cat food but this is a question for the general group. Our Scottish Straight, Belle, is now 7 months old and our breeder supplied a long list of what we should be feeding her including Organic zero fat cottage cheese (tvorog here in Kiev) and raw meat as well as Royal Canin Brittish Shorthair catfood.

We learned immediately that Belle would not eat dry food on it's own but would if it was added to Friskies or other pouches - we have added raw meat from time to time but as the only other cat I have had was nearly 40 years ago I have to ask

1. Is raw meat really essential to a cats diet?

2. if a cat is happy with commercial wet food Purina friskies or Kitekat is it really necessary to add dry food at all?

Thanks very much

I would definitely not say that raw food is necessary for cats. If it is too challenging for you to provide it and the cat likes commercial food I don't see any reason raw would be necessary. Raw food must be sourced safely. I don't know about where you are, but here it has to be raw food bought from butchers rather than from a grocery store.

We have three cats. They eat Nature's Variety Instinct kibble and a variety of wet foods including Weruva, Nutro naturals, Fancy Feast, and Sheba.

It is best to have a few brands of foods your cat eats, just in case something is discontinued or a brand has to recall their food.

I personally don't like Royal Canin. I feel that they charge a lot for food that has both grains and fillers that just aren't something that cats really need in their diet.

Just one opinion.

Raw food is the most biologically appropriate food you can feed, but it doesn't work for everyone or every cat. The best thing you can do for your kitten is feed the highest quality food you can. So if that's raw awesome, if not then a wet food that's mostly meat and less fillers. Friskies and the likes are low quality and generally not the best.
