Hi,

I'm back under a new name. I lost my cat Birdie in January.

I adopted Rocky about 6 months ago. He is 3 and a big cat. He was fat, he is about right at 14lb now.

I've been dealing with smelly odors and blood in my cats stool and bum since I got him.

He has pretty good poops, but sometimes drops tiny poop balls or has a poop ball in his sleep.

He had anal gland rupture as a kitten.

He had a ultrasound - normal.

Probiotics have helped smell.

Took him to vet and he had a lot of blood in his colon. Anal glands were expressed -brown and pasty.
(he was on a very low calorie diet in shelter and in a cage, so maybe didn't have enough stool to empty anal glands)

He is now on a venison and pea prescription diet at 2.65 a can. (he needs 2 a day)

He continues to have blood on his bum. Even after a firm poop, he has brown liquid on his bumb.

I am starting to think in addition to colitis his anal glands don't close well. so he doesn't rupture, but drains fluid more often. Sometimes there is blood at 4 and 8 on his bum. Sometimes he drops a bit of blood on the floor.

The blood thing happens pretty often. Sometimes he will go up to ten days kind of alright, but with swollen anal glands that seem to get big and then get a bit better. His bum is sensitive. I do warm compresses. Have all furniture covered. I try to wipe his bum after morning poop to see if there is blood or brown stuff.

Vet is only now suggesting malabsorption test. I am thinking maybe he needed a month of anti-inflammatory before the novel diet started.

I don't feel like vet is doing very much.

This is so depressing. I'm exhausted.

OK guys go! Any ideas?

I know all of these chronic digestive issues are draining both emotionally and financially, they are also exceptionally frustrating.  I would get the malabsorption test done.  Low vitamin B12 would be a clear indicator of IBD.  Any testing needs to be done before giving an anti-inflammatory.  The steroid reduces or eliminates the inflammation which makes any diagnostic results meaningless.

I scheduled the test for next week. I'll try to get it earlier in the week.
