Hey guys.. I have a 4 month old kitty, and he has these very small black specks of something on his chin. He's had them since I got him as far as I recall.. Any idea what it could be? Is it just dirt? or blackheads?

What can I do to clear it up and prevent it?

(sorry, hard to capture on my camera)

Looks like feline acne. You can use fine toothed flea comb to gently remove the blackheads. Then clean the area with plain water and keep the area clean daiy. Some people like to use Stridex acne pads (the kind for Humans) but since the acne is so close to the mouth I'd worry about the cat liicking his lips and possibly ingesting the solution the Stridex contains.

Do you use plastic bowls? Some people feel that plastic bowls can cause acne in cats because the plastic is porus and holds onto bacteria which can get on your cat's face as he eats or drinks. Stainless steel or glass bowls are best to use.

Thanks!

I don't use plastic bowls, I use flat ceramic plates for food and a stainless steel water bowl..  What else could possibly cause it?

Maybe i'll try the stridex pads.. what about Witch Hazel toner? Maybe that would be more gentle?

Cats chins are pretty dirty with bacteria from saliva and food particles so acne tends to develop anyways. Keeping the chin and mouth area clean helps.

An allergy or sensitivity to food or a brand of food may be a possible cause. My rescue cat can't eat one particular brand of raw meat chub because she gets acne after eating it

I've used witch hazel on a previous cat. The acne was on his chin so he wasn't able to lick off the witch hazel. You could give it a try. Just use a very small amount on your cat and keep the cat from licking his lips for a couple minutes afterwards.

Looks like acne to me too.  My orange tabby, Archie suffered from acne as a youngster.  My vet said that Archie would eventually outgrow it, which he did - though it took about a year. I cleaned his chin with a damp cloth every day or so.

You might consider having your kitty checked by a vet just to be sure.  Be cautious, though, some vets will administer steroid injections to manage the acne.
