How do you set up your home for fosters when you already have cats?

I would like to offer to foster with the rescue groups round here. There aren't any official shelters or anything so it's entirely volunteers.

The situation is that I live in a three bedroom flat, just me and my two in my profile pic. The cats have the run of the place except for one bedroom I'm looking to rent out.

If the foster's healthy then they'll be able to be with my two but many of the cats that desperately need homes have leukaemia or caids. In that case they'd be confined to the spare room.

Would this be enough for a cat, the reality is that these cats take a long time to find a home so the idea of a cat being confined to one room for years isn't a nice one for me.

Obviously my current cats are the priority.

So what are your experiences? Does anyone have a similar set up? How do you manage it? Do you think I'd just have to say I can only take a cat with a clean bill of health?

Being in a room is still preferable to the alternative, cats are very adaptable. When I introduced two sets of cats I went to the local hardware store and bought a inexpensive wooden screen door and attached it with screws into the frame of my interior door. These holes are easily filled later with wood putty which you can buy colored to match your stain or painted over. It allows everyone to interact and doesn't make the 'guest' feel so isolated. Just make sure you get a LOCKING eye and hook latch, it has a clip that must be depressed to unlock the door, My resident cats hit the door, which caused the hook to bounce up and come unlatched and my new cats got bit, it was horrible. Your resident cats will get used to newcomers, it may take a while, mine have been exposed to so many strays around here, they take new ones in stride, but be careful, a fight can happen very suddenly.

You will be blessed for opening your heart and your home to these who are so desperate, thank you so much for caring!

That's a good idea. I can make something like that.

Mine were street kittens which were fostered before I adopted them so I'm not as worried about them getting on. They've moved a lot and been around various other cats in their short lives. For me it's more about health, I don't want mine catching anything they'd managed to avoid so far.
