Hey guys!

Not sure if you guys remember me, I have the baby Tyrion kitty that I found out recently is a fippy kitty. Tyrion is actually doing really well and finally eating well again! He's growing too!

This is about my other 5 year old cat Prince. About a week-two weeks ago I noticed something on the couch that didn't have a smell but I knew it wasn't chocolate because we are very careful with chocolate around the house due to the cats. I can't say I sniffed it, but I assumed it was a dabble of poop and cleaned it up. Since then it's happened twice on my bed. I wasn't sure it was Prince until yesterday when I was petting Prince on my bed and when he moved his butt the same looking dabble was there.

I did look up on google before coming here, and so far I've read it could be some sort of anal problem, or it could be anal glands? I question the last thing because it was said that the anal glands tend to have a fishy odor and I have not smelled such an odor thus far. I'm reaching out to you guys hoping we can figure this out. If I have to take him to the vet I will, I'm just nervous because I recently had a bad experience there getting overcharged with Tyrion's surgery and whatnot, and I haven't been able to find another vet I trust.

For now we put Prince in his own kitty room with litter box, food, water and some comfort toys and beds. We don't have a door for our bedroom yet so it's the only way to make sure he stays off the bed, and also he's been uppity with Tyrion, but that's because we were recently doing some construction in the house >.>

I did notice "soft stool" in his litter box today, they're new within the last 24 hours. Not soupy like diarrhea, just soft and lightly colored, if that helps at all.

The dabbles of poop he leaves behind are dime size and dark. Counting today I've seen 4 total in the last week and a half.

I would call and let your vet know what is happening and see if he needs to go in.

Is it possible your cat got into some people food that might not agree with him? Years ago one of my cats stole some food off our plate the night before we were going out of town.  My poor cat sitter was cleaning up poop squirts from our carpeting all weekend.  She called me right away and asked if he had eaten anything other than his normal food lately.  I remembered that he had licked some spaghetti sauce off my plate.  It was a small amount.  This was a holiday weekend and my vet's office was closed.  She has had the same vet for years and when mine was closed she left a message on her vet's after hours voice mail.  They check their voice mail while mine did not.  Her vet advised her to keep an eye on my cat to make sure he was eating and drinking.  Instead of just checking in on my cat she moved into my house for the weekend to monitor him.  He was eating and drinking fine but we sent a fax to her vet giving her permission for treatment in our absence with copies of an ID to match the signature to.  He did not need vet treatment but it was great that her vet was willing to work with us.  Her vet told her to keep leaving messages with updates and said she would personally come in and treat my cat if she needed to even though the practice was closed.  I got a gift card for my friend since she would not let us pay her.  I also got a gift card for her to give to her vet for being willing to help a us when we have never used their practice. Within three days the poop squirts went away.  We made sure he never touched spaghetti sauce again.

Well the cool thing about both our cats is that they don't take an interest in human food. I've let them sniff my plate before not to feed them but to see if it interests them and they both turn their nose up no matter if it's pasta, dairy...I joke to my boyfriend that they can smell the pollution in our over processed foods hahaha. They loveee their cat food! So I really doubt that's the cause because aside from us never feeding them human food as an extra precaution we don't leave any out anywhere for them to get into should they ever change their minds. Prince is a little heavyset too so I've been trying to give him a healthy amount of cat food per day and I monitor him regularly.

To be honest this seems completely random. I almost wonder if it might be stress induced because it started around the time we did construction to a bedroom downstairs about a week to 2 weeks ago. There were a couple of accidental loud bangs when the cats were near the room, and Prince has been acting on edge ever since. He's even been edgy with the other cat and we've been trying to just pet him more and let him know he's okay, as well as separating the cats if they start fighting just to give them both a safe place.

These dabbles of stool don't have foul odor though, so unless the foul odor is a possible symptom of anal glands and not absolute, I'm really not sure what it could be because that's the only "anal issue" I've read about linked to stress. I'm certain it's not his diet he's had no issues at all with his food since the day we got them.

I would suggest to you that if there are no other issues with his poop/health, these are poop remnants that are catching in his hair and dropping off thereafter - or, he feels them back there and tries to shake them off. That be the case, you are lucky he isn't scooting his butt across the floor to help remove them. They are often referred to as 'dingleberries'. Does he by chance have a bit longer hair 'back there"? I think you might want to keep an eye on what his behind looks like right after he has used the litterbox, and see if/when you can find 'stuff' still left on his behind. The on-and-off of this happening could easily be related to whether or not his stool is softer or harder, which could be brought on by food changes, or the occasional upset stomach that happens with all cats/humans/etc.

If you keep checking his behind after he uses the litterbox and don't see anything, but he still 'involuntarily' leaves a 'nugget' behind before the next time he uses the litterbox, a vet visit might be in order to see why he would be losing stool in such a way.

its definitely the latter. he has really short fur and its not just getting stuck. Today, he was laying down next to me, resting, and all of a sudden he jumped away like something had bitten him. And i saw a little poop land next to me as he was flying away. it is very involuntary and he sometimes seems disturbed by it (like today) and sometimes not (where he wont even notice it). it happens only occasionally. he HATES the vet so i may just email my vet first before taking him in...

Emailing them is a good start. He might not be evacuating his stool appropriately, especially if it is on the 'hard' side. Keep us posted - and, hopefully you will eventually hear from other members who may have experienced the same thing.

I have a cat that has this problem as well. Usually hard little balls, but occasionally really icky stuff :0 He is also tail-less, whether by birth or accident I'm not sure. He was found in the woods when very small. A vet told me that he may not have proper nerves "back there" and can't always feel there is still more that he needs to eliminate. Just throwing that out there. :)
