Once again the animals of the Denver Metro area are being targeted.

http://9news.com/storyfull.aspx?storyid=24535

(Supplementing the story with what I just saw on the news...)

Some guy stole 4 puppies from the Colorado Humane Society and set them on fire. My understanding is that two of the puppies survived. They showed one on the news, and he is just precious. The other is being treated for burns to his paws. They definitely need our thoughts and prayers. The two other puppies did not survive, and were found at two different locations.

If I understood the news correctly, a company is donating and installing a surveillance security system to the Humane Society. This was the 3rd break in at the shelter in 2 weeks.

They do have surveillance video of someone who might be a suspect. We can all hope and pray for justice for these poor dogs.

Grrrr.. I'd like to bind him with duct tape and set him on fire (I'd put him out before he got worse than 2nd degree burns.....maybe)

Oh Heidi, how HORRIBLE! We REALLY need to change the status of animal cruelty laws - though wouldn't something like this also be treated as breaking & entering & theft? This is just intolerable. My prayers go out to those puppies!

This is soooo horrifying.

A similar thing happened at our shelter a few years ago. About a week or two after breaking into the shelter and mutilating a bunch of dogs, the teens who did this went to Florida and bludgeoned to death the mother and father of the lead teen's girlfriend.

The evidence is clear...animal abuse is the first step toward human murder.

Laurie, luckily Colorado does have felony animal cruelty provisions, and this one would definitely fall under those! Besides the Breaking and Entering and Theft. Law enforcement are taking this seriously, thank goodness. Their words were, "If he's capable of this, we're very concerned about what else he is capable of."

That was the so-called "vampire case", wasn't it? The guy had his friends convinced that he was a vampire, and ran off to New Orleans with them following the murders?

Heidi, that is really horrifying, but sadly not an isolated case. I really hope they catch the guy, and punish him as severely as possible.

Yes, it was. The prosecutors from Florida met with me to talk about the case. They showed me photos from the crime scene down in Florida. It was shocking to see the brutality of the attack. It is so clear to me that any one who can deliberately torture an animal is easily capable of doing horrific things to humans as well. So sad.

Cruelty apparently knows no bounds. The day after Christmas, my husband and I took a long walk around our town (population 9,600), and were shocked at the number of "Missing Cat" posters. Unfortunately, the problem has continued unabated. Nobody knows whether these cats are being "catnapped" and sold to laboratories, sacrificed in Satanic rituals, eaten, or being skinned so that their furs can be sold as coat trimmings or "rheumatoid arthritis blankets". I'm reminded of the ancient mariners' maps depicting the world as flat, and with the words, "Here be monsters", beyond a certain point. That seems to be an apt description of our depraved societies.

They think the murderer tried to steal more puppies again this weekend. Luckily, with the $15,000 security system that was donated and went online the evening he again tried to break in (Sunday), he was not successful. He did break some windows again, though.

There is now a $10,000 reward to catch this sicko. IMO, he deserves to be strung up by his... well, whatever would be most painful.

UPDATE!!!!

from http://9news.com/storyfull.aspx?storyid=25074

Man being questioned in burning puppy cases
Written By: Jeannie Piper, Web Producer created: 3/3/2004 3:59:11 PM
updated: 3/3/2004 4:28:27 PM

JEFFERSON COUNTY - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is questioning a 19-year-old about the burning of several puppies.

Three puppies were burned in two separate incidents last month. Two survived, including a black Shepard mix named Ashley.

Detectives later released surveillance video from a Walgreenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s store, which they said showed a man buying flammable materials.

Enhanced images from that video were released on Monday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says several people saw those images on 9NEWS and tipped police off to the suspect. He was being questioned on suspicion of animal abuse and burglary Wednesday afternoon.

All of the puppies that were set on fire had been stolen from the Colorado Humane Society in Englewood.

9NEWS will have more details, when additional information is available.

Unfortunately, Hedi, they weren't
They talked to one of the Humane Society workers last night on the news, who had a little homage to all of the puppies on a bulletin board in their office. They were just the most precious things you've ever seen, adorable little black puppies. She said with the man in custody she felt like she could finally grieve for them properly without having to worry that it could happen again.

The puppy who survived, Ashley, is going to a new forever home in the next couple days!
The lady who is adopting her was one of over 150 people who called about adopting her (I hope they decided to adopt other puppies!). The difference was....she called about Ashley every day!
So there's the happy ending to the story.

I am so glad they caught the guy (if he is the right one). I hope he gets the maximum punishment!

And, I am so glad the surviving puppy has a good new home!

Thanks for the update.

Another update....

According to court records from his arraignment, the suspect confessed to the whole thing, detailing exactly what he had done. He is facing about a dozen felony counts now. Here's the really horrible thing - he owns a dog, a black lab (why was he targeting the black puppies???????). His parents are caring for the dog now.
