Ya, better observe her for awhile and make sure she is comfortable.
Maybe she have some digestive problems. Is she still active?

Hey Tabby,

Sorry for the delayed response.

It's been a week since the last incident happened. So now she's fine already.

She's been on probiotics, antibiotics as well as anti-diarrhoea pills. Stools have gone back to normal and no more puking.

I'm suspecting that she was either suffering from the after effects of deworming or acting up cos of overeating.

Whichever the case, i've reduced her feed amount to about 1/4 small can per feed, 3-4 times a day.

Fingers crossed....

Hi Derian,

Good to hear that Princess is back to normal.
So she is around 8 months now. She's still a kitten and growing. The amount of food given to her might not be enough. Small can is only about 80gms? Meaning she eats only one can a day? That's too little for s growing kitten. Give her more but just monitor if she's ok with the amount that don't make her puke.

Hi Tabby,

Both Maori(male) and Princess(female) are coming to 4.5 months. They weight about 1.8kg and 1.4kg.

And yes it's about 80g per day...mixed up with some dry food between 2 kittens....

Basically, the both of them eats 1 can (combined) a day with some dry food...You figure thats too little?

They are slightly light for their age but should be ok. Maori will be heavier than Princess as males are heavier than females.
As long as they are healthy and steadily putting on weight is ok. Weigh them every week. Run your hands along their body and see if you can feel their ribs. If it feel very boney, then they are under weight. If you don't really the ribs so much, they are ok. Of course if the ribs can't be felt at all means they are overweight.
They are still very young and are still kittens, so feed them as much as they can eat as now it's they growing age and needs lots of protiens and not carbohydrates.

Just did a bit of reading on how much to feed....

Fussie cat website indicates the following:

- For a kitten that is 3 pounds, i.e. princess: She would require about 180kcal per day. 1 can of 80g is equivalent to 49kcal. I would need to feed her approximately 3.5 cans of 80g cans to meet her calorie requirement

- For a kitten that is 4 pounds, i.e. Maori: He requires 220kcal per day, 4 cans of 80g cans to meet his requirement.

That's quite a lot of wet food to feed a day for my 2 kittens!

Yes Derian, those are the feeding guidelines. A cat/kitten needs a certain amount of calories per day. That'll keep them in good shape. Too little, they become lethargic and too much and if they don't excercise to burn off, they become fat. So depending on the activities of your kittens. If they are very active, a little more calorie is ok as they will burn off by running about.
That's ahoy I say you have to monitor their growth and watch their waste line.
I don't follow exactly what's on the tin can. I roughly gauge by my kitten's ability to eat and his waste line. My kitten now is 8 months old and he eats 7 small cans of fussie cat each day which is about 343 calories and he is not fat. He is neutered and he is still pretty active. He runs about a lot. So my boy eats more than your two kittens combined :lol3:

For kittens, they usually recommend feeding double amount of adult cats. But then again, every cat is different. Some eat less and some more. So, what you read is a guideline, you have to be the real guide to your kittens. As for my boy, he'll call when he is hungry, so for convenient sake, I feed him with the small can but more times because I don't want to keep the balance in the fridge and heat up later. Heating up, I read somewhere is no good. So his meal times are regulated and I don't free feed him with dry food.

Wow 7 cans of wet food for 1 kitten per day!

Haha sorry...I'm really shocked....

So this means that i've been constantly underfeeding them for the past 2 months....gosh...

Been feeding them like 1/4 can per feed. And i only feed them wet food 2 times a day. So effectively they only finish 1 can per day.

In between i'll give them some dry food...No wonder they are always so excited when it's meal time!

Ya, kittens eat a lot so don't under feed them. That's why they are very exited when it's meal time.
So maybe you can gradually increase the amount. Feed more amount and more often. They won't over eat but don't give so much till they can't finish and waste the food.
My preference for my boy is wet food.

You are welcomed Derian [emoji]128515[/emoji]

Always monitor your kittens and weigh them weekly, so you'll know the progress of their growth. You can try giving more and see if they finish. Sometimes they won't finish at one go but come back again in a while's time to finish.
My boy sometimes leave like a tablespoonful behind and I leave his plate there and he runs past his plate after going to the hall and he said 'eh, got food' and he finish all :lol3: If not I bring it up to the kitchen counter and he immediately finish the balance. So you have to monitor their style and habits. Best is finish in one sitting. So sometimes even after awhile they don't want to eat the balance, it means they are full already. So you know, this is how you gauge their amount of food per feed. just have to go through trials and errors to get it right. But sometimes you get it right, their mood change :lol3:

That's provided they keep still :lol3:
Best way is weigh together with one of them and then subtract your weight. More accurate. So just keep a journal or record for them.
I note down everything from health to food and all his supplies to toys and all he needs and all I need to make my care for him easier. Note the health part like cough, sneeze, pee color, poo, date and number of times of symtoms is impt, so if just in case something is not right, you can tell the vet and show a picture of it and show to the vet.

All of the advice above is great! Kittens really do need unlimited access to food, until they are about a year or so. I would leave dry food down always and increase the amount of wet 3-4 times a day.

Have you spayed and neutered them yet?

Seems like the increase in feeding is causing them a bit of indigestion. Maori had loose bowels for the 1st time ever but thankfully now it's back to normal. His stomach was feeling so bloated and tight that i thought he was gonna explode. He skipped dinner and has resumed normal business for breakfast. I've gone back to 1/2 can per feed instead of 1 can per feed which i did a day ago.

Princess is also having a reaction to the food increase. Either that or it's a reaction to a change in dry food from Royal Canin for kittens to Hill's for kittens. She had a few bouts of loose bowels last night and is now resting. I'm also going back to 1/2 can per feed for her and monitoring how she's reacting to it....

Ok, but I thought they were on fussie cat wet food?

So how many times are they fed with wet food each day? Are you slowly transiting them over to wet? Since they felt bloated, maybe just stick to the usual amount. Slowly decrease the dry.
Kittens have to be fed frequently as many times as they can eat but not too much in one go. They need the proteins to grow.
Either you increase the amount a little for each feed or increase the frequency of feed. Not together. So you have to experiment with the amount of food and amount of times they are fed. Both of them might be different so you need to know how to tackle them and create a feeding schedule or routine and get them use to it and this will also lighten your chores.
It took me awhile to get the feeding right for January.
So just keep monitoring them and do the best for them and [emoji]10084[/emoji]️[emoji]10084[/emoji]️[emoji]10084[/emoji]️ them! :D

Yes for wet food they are on fussie cat. I mix up a bit with dry like during supper or lunch. Previously the dry was royal canin n I only just changed to hill's. They are both up and running about now which is a good sign. I am guessing that princess is just having a reaction to the increased feeding and switch to hill's dry.
