HI all,

I've adopted princess about 3 weeks ago. She's born on 5th April which means she's coming to about 4 months soon. During her first week, she experienced some loose bowels and soiled her backside. The loose bowels were inconsistent. Some days it'll be fine and others not so. I had to keep monitoring her after her poop to check if she's soiled herself. I've checked with the breeder and those weren't problems previously. Went to the vet for vaccination and deworming during the first week and had a check with him. It's already the third week now and I've still not found out what are the issues affecting. Any help is most appreciatedefinitely.

Hi Derian and Princess, welcome to the Catsite :wavey:
You've come to the right place. There are many experienced catties here. Just be patience and you'll proably get your answer.
You mentioned that your baby have some loose stools. Is there a change of food? Or has she eaten something she is not supposed to be eating? Like insects or something that spilled on the floor?
Since its intermittent, why don't you monitor and observe for the next one or two days? Proably it's some indigestion and hopefully she did not ingest something poisonous.
If symtoms still persist, take a shot of the loose stool and show it to the vet.
Let us know the outcome and please introduce yourself and Princess and post her photos on New kid on the block section.

Are you feeding the same food that the breeder was? What do you feed her?

Hi all. Thanks for the suggestions. She's still intermittently having loose bowels and pasty bowels. Just this morning, which was about 2 hours ago, i woke up to find her litter tray with pasty bowels. I've been having to clean her backside for a number of times a week. Sometimes, things are fine and sometimes not so. But she's still moving around and eating well so i suppose that's still not so bad. She's about 1.2kg at 4 months, persian.

As for wet food, i'm feeding her fussie cat, same as what the previous breeder was feeding her. She's pooping almost 3 times a day, not sure if this is overly frequent.

She's a beautiful cat! I had the same problem when I first took Mingo home. I took him to the vet, who said that probably stress was causing the diarrhea.  A visit to the vet is not out of order because if you take a fecal sample with you, they can test it t it for for parasites. There are a couple of things you can try before you go. First, get some probiotic powder from a pet store and mix that in her food. This cleared up Mingo's problem. You can always put a teaspoon of pumpkin in her food, which many TCS members recommend. You can used plain canned pumpkin from the grocery store or pumpkin powder from a pet store. Keep us posted about how she does.

Is it yellow can or colored can? I researched this food & decided against it because all of the colored cans have seafood in them. Maybe it's that. The yellow can food looks pretty decent though.

I have three cats & when I first got them I switched their food to wet because they were being fed dry & one of my cats got runny poop, it wasn't all the time but it was enough to make me switch to a more costly food & it went away.

I'm not talking about cat food. By pumpkin, I mean the canned pumpkin you make pies with; it may be in the baking aisle. It's a big can, so someone suggested divvying it up by teaspoonfuls on a cookie sheet and freezing it for future use. After it's frozen, put them all in a baggie. The probiotic comes in small papers.

Dear DreamerRose,

I've brought her to the vet together with the poop sample. The same vet that gave her the deworm and vaccination.

She told me that it could be due to a multitude of reasons and told me that the poop sample testing wasn't necessary. She did give me antibiotics and probiotics in liquid form. I've tried to administer via syringe and she foamed. Figured that she didn't like the taste or the thick liquid. Whichever the case, i've stopped those. Will check up on powdered probiotics at the pet store or even pumpkin :)

My Maori(male kitten, same age) who's been the resident cat until she came along has been pouncing on her since i started introducing them. She's also playing along with him but since he's so much bigger(1.6kg to her 1.2kg), he's always pressing her down. Not sure if that adds to her stress?

If you could get some metronidazole (Flagyl) from your vet she'd be right as rain in no time.  I keep some on hand for "poopy butt" situations.

I've tried both yellow and coloured can. The yellow ones are chicken as the main and the coloured ones, tuna is the main.

But is seafood really so bad for them? What food are you feeding your kitties?

Hi Derian,
Good that the vet saw her and you said she foamed after the administration of the antibiotics and probiotics? Immediately or after awhile?
My boy is on fussie cat too. I never feed him dry food. I've tried different flavours and his favorite is the tuna with anchovies. Have not tried other flavours as I'm not sure if he likes them as I don't want to waste money on that.
So far he has got no problem with his food.
Your cat might have ingested something else that gave her loose bowels?

Hi Tabby Tom,

She foamed immediately after administration of the probiotics. Not sure she's ingested anything that doesn't agree with her stomach though.

Would an irritating male kitten who pounces on her all the time cause stomach upset?

You might want to let the vet know about the foaming immediately after administration of the medicine. They should be able to think of an alternative way to treat her.
Don't think the pouncing of the other male cat is causing the problem. Proably she might have some digestive issues.
You can try what some have suggested feeding her pumpkins. Personally I've not used it before on my boy
Hope she gets well soon.
Btw, she's a pretty kitten :heart3:

Hi all,

Managed to visit the vet(new) about 3 days ago after another pooping accident. The vet checked her and checked her stool this time and found some parasites under the microscope and told us that she's got amoeba. Some parasite that destroys the intestinal walls and hence causes the problems. She's prescribed some antibiotics coupled with diarrhoea meds. Been administrating these meds for 3 days now and princess's poop seems much solid now. I'm so relieved and fingers crossed,She'll be fine and healthy from here on. She does hate the meds though. Especially the pink 'scourbon' for diarrhoea. Struggles like hell and foams more than usual. But at least I've learnt how to properly hold her down to feed her meds....

Hi all. She's back with the soft stool again. In fact we just went to the vet today after she had a pooping accident last night. Did her deworming and x-ray as well as fecal sample to check for remaining parasite. After coming back from the vet, I fed her meds and her dinner. About 2 hours later she vomited and had watery stool....any advice would be great

Hi Derian,
What did the vet say about her soft stools?
Maybe you should hold back her food for a day and let her drink more water.
Have you noticed whether if she had eaten something that she is not supposed to eat? She was ok for at least one week right?
Hope someone with more experience with this kind of situation can advise you on this. In the meanwhile, how is she doing?

That's her poop and puke. Read somewhere that deworming might have an effect onher bowels and might even cause puking...she's still on antibiotics. There's also anti diarrhoea pills, another anti diarrhoea liquid and prebiotics. Quite a lot of medication now for her. The vet said to observe her diet and see how things go. In the meantime I'm planning to cut her food portion to 1/4 can per feed. I've had to clean her up 3 times today already so it's really quite something.

The amount of puke was almost like 2 cans worth of canned food which was really quite scary. We also did an x Ray to check but no foreign material seen.
