the male will follow me to my car and to the dumpster {getting rid of garbage} .the female is stand offish when male cat is around and will not come near us. not sure how to teach them to get along . I  have   two hands to give each one some TLC.  there is a bench close by for smokers offer each one cat treats at the same time?

Lisa,

Have they been spayed and neutered? That would be the first and best thing to do. And to get them their shots. There may be people in your area to perform a TNR (Trap Neuter/Spay/Return). I would check with Alley Cat Allies to see if someone in your area could help with that. Cats that are fixed are healthier and less likely to fight and spray etc.

With that said, food is the best motivator. I take care of a feral colony and once in a while another feral comes around. I use food to build trust and then I TNR them. Food really works. A good wet food. If by chance you have access to a McDonalds or something nice warm pieces of chicken (chicken breasts)  work really well so does turkey. I use warm chicken thighs and ferals LOVE it.

If you get them eating together then they associate each other with good things (like food). After while of feeding they should warm up and as long as they feel like they are not competing for the food (so have enough) they should get along fine.

Just be careful that you do not get scratched or bitten during any interactions.

Thanks for caring for these cats!!
