My MIL, that is.

She called yesterday to say that she had lost two pounds and needs to make them up. Did we have any homemade cookies to bring in? Well, no, we don't, because I'm not baking much right now; the last I baked was for the July 4th picnic at my sister's when I made those cookies. And besides, we are well into the 90s at this point and I really don't want to turn the oven on. She hinted that blueberry muffins would taste so good now.
What could I do? I told her that I'd make her some blueberry muffins.

Did I have the bread cookbook from Taste of Home? Well, yeah. Why? Well, there's a blueberry scone recipe in that book that is just delicious. It calls for lemon yogurt, though; did I have lemon yogurt on hand? Um, no. Well, I'll have to go to the store for some. Huh? Yes, the recipe calls for lemon yogurt; if I don't have any, I'll have to buy some. Um.....OK. And I need to make the glaze that goes over the scones, because the glaze is the best part.
 again

And that was all she wanted. Once I said that I'd bake the blasted scones, she said OK and she had to go. And hung up!

Rick was......peeved. And he was going to tell her that it's in the 90s and why in the name of all that's holy would I be turning the oven on to bake flipping scones when it's 90 degrees? I told him to let it go. The woman is 94 years old and she can't bake anymore. But then he told me that she had called him on Thursday night to see if we had any cookies in the freezer (we have six chocolate chunkers in the freezer, but Rick wasn't giving them up.Evidently, she thought I could talk him into giving up his cookies; she obviously doesn't know her son very well, if she thought that was going to happen). I suppose if making scones will make her happy, well, then I'm making scones. I'm doing them this morning, while it's still fairly coolish.

Boy, that woman can sell ice to Eskimos!

Try to remember the good times.  You have posted here several times about how much you learned from her about cooking and baking.  You have also told stories about the days spent cooking and baking together.  She is the same woman she is just dealing with old age and living in assisted living now.

That's a tough one. Maybe she doesn't realize how hot it is? Sorry that she railroaded you-why didn't she just ask to get some at a bakery? I guess I don't know the history between you guys. and your husband is getting mad which probably makes you feel like you are stuck in the middle. Do you have a fan you can put on you when cooking? I probably would have caved and did it while saying things under my breathe. I guess I am immature that way. I tend to be stubborn and independent. If I don't want to do something, I don't. I am getting better at this with age.

sometimes we do things because we know that they are older and want to not make waves. I have been told why do I speak to family members and I reply=I don't want our relationship to be slit up then when they pass I will have regrets..so I cope the best I can. sometimes I don't reach out to them as much as I should have but that's just the way I am. At least you can get this baked and done and relax the rest of the day. Today is a pool/beach day for sure!

Oh, the scones are baked and glazed. Dishes are done. I wasn't really complaining. Honest. And yeah she taught me everything and I owe her big time. I think Rick was more frustrated than I was. We do realize her age and that she can't bake anymore.

I would have liked it more if she would have just flat-out said, "Pam, would you make some blueberry scones?" It's the manipulation I didn't like. I would have made them anyway.

Lemon Blueberry Drop Scones with just a hint of a lemon glaze, just enough to make them a little shiny.

Lol at you guys! Of course you don't like being manipulated.

People just need to learn to speak up. If you want something ask! Don't manipulate people with guilt etc. This is in response to the situation not anyone personally ;)

They are beautiful and look delicious. @Winchester She is a blessed woman to have you for a daughter in-law.
Thanks. We try to do right by her.

Our son came in last night for a bit of a visit. He had gone into see his grandmother and then stopped here on his way back home. She gave him a scone and he said it was really good.

Those look really good.

Pam, would you make me some lemon blueberry drop scones?

YUM! "Me too, me too!" LOL!! [emoji]128513[/emoji].

Juuuust kidding Pam, but they do look good!

It's been highs in the 92-94 range here too, w/ the heat index 102-105. I try not to use the oven either! In fact, I don't buy frozen meals much, but when I do, I try to get healthy ones. Today I picked up a few, because I refuse to turn on the oven!
Especially since I don't have central air, just window units.
I got some Lean Cuisine & some Amy's. ( Love that Amy's bowl w/ the black eyed peas, broccoli, etc..) [emoji]128522[/emoji]
