Tearing while eating

I recently took in a semi-feral cat who got a clean bill of health by my vet, but I noticed that she literally has tears running down and dripping into the food when she eats. And this only happens when she eats. Has anyone experienced this? I would hate to have to take her to the vet if this is of no concern since she was just trapped and is adjusting to life inside.

Are there wet spots near her eyes when she is not eating? Any watering or discharge from the eyes?

If it's clear drainage, it might just be allergies.  Try elevating her food bowl so she doesn't have to bend her head down as far.

When she is not eating there is no discharge or watering. She does have wet stains but again only while eating and they dry up pretty quickly after she's done. All I can think of is gustatory hyperlacrimation, but I'm not sure why that would be the case for her. She gets Canidae Grain-Free Pure Salmon & Mackerel (wet food) and Friskie's dry food (still working in switching her kibble to Canidae).

Yes, drainage is clear, literally like tears. Thanks for the tip! I'll elevate her food dish tonight and see if that helps.

It's possible that her tear ducts are blocked, either from old scarring r from something congenital.  The tears should drain into the nasal cavity through internal passages, but if those are blocked (not uncommon in flat-faced cats), the tears just overflow the eyes.

But wouldn't she then have drainage at other times too and not just while eating? I'm confused.

How about ther times when she has her head down for some reason, like drinking water, or investigating a bug on the carpet?  I'm thinking POSITION rather than food having anything to do with it.

No tearing when she's playing on the ground but as soon as she even just smells food, she tears up. Just spoke to my vet who said that although it's rare, she may have hypersalivation due to a potential prior facial trauma causing the facial nerve to mis-wire during healing (after all she lived outside for over 1 years). Less likely the tear duct as it exclusively occurs during eating. No real concern that requires medical attention since it does not seem to bother her.

I find this totally fascinating!  I hope all continues to go well for your girl.  I'm glad she has someone understanding to love her.

This IS interesting! One of my cats also occasionally tears up while eating. It doesn't happen at any other time. He does have a little "bump" in his nose, almost like a deviated septum, but no vet has ever mentioned it and he has no problems breathing... except for the occasional snore during sleep.
 Maybe the two are related!

I realize this thread is 3 years old, but I’m having the same issue. My baby is almost 4 mo old and eyes weep when eating. This happens mostly with wet fish food, canned cod. He also has kitty acne with this food. Otherwise, on dry Purina Kitten his symptoms clear. Fish allergen maybe?

Now it is 5 years old. I came here because i'm searching information about my kitten too. she is around 6-7 months. she never cried. but yesterday when I gave her treats (tuna and chicken) suddenly tear flow down from her eyes. Everytime when she lick the treat again she will cry. at first I thought its normal and funny because I found a feed in instagram that shows a cat cry. but later i think thats not normal. why does she cry when only eating the treat?? She never cry again when i give her dry foods and water later. Hoping someone might reply even if this an old forum.

My cat is 3 and a half months old. She usually eats a little dry food. But today she wasn’t eating properly. I gave her chicken soup, she ate a little. After that I gave her fish. Same fish she eats. But today she teared up and Didn't eat properly. So I mixed it up and made it almost liquid like. She ate that but she was crying. Clear tears. I thought she has tooth ache or somethin. I checked but she looked fine. I'm really worried about her not eating.
