Hi all! First post, and unfortunately it's concerning a dire situation with my big boy Morris. I awoke yesterday morning to a obscure, loud, distressed moan, as my alarm clock was going off. Morris, my cat, usually meows wanting to go outside for a few while I get ready for work...(and usually makes hitting snooze impossible!). Yesterday it was a distressed call for help. I got up, and there had to be at least 15 different little puddles of throw up, with a couple that were large piles. I saw him and instantly knew there was a major problem. All around his mouth was soaking wet with saliva, and throw up. His eyes were glassed over.....I thought he was dying. The local vet didn't open until 7:30, and it was 5:00 am.....I fixed up a box with a towel, and told him to hold out as long as he could...I got him to the vet office, and told them what happened. The vet present (not the one who owned the practice and who I knew growing up) said..." We can do a blood panel, but that will cost you $170-200...or, we can treat him by symptom". I said "do what you think is best for my boy". She proceeded to give him IV (through the skin) fluids, and a anti nausea shot. He wasn't hyperglycemic they tested for that too. She dosed him with a topical wormer, and gave me 2 doses of DiaGel, and a script of Flagyl....I had to go to work there after, and had prepared myself to come home and find him dead. He pulled through the day, I gave meds, and put him in the bed with me that night. He looked a lot better this morning, so I went to work. This evening, he doesn't look good. He's not like he was at the start, but there isn't an improvement over leaving the vet either. He breathes heavily (granted he was almost 30lbs, and after being so sick, weighed 20 at the vet office, but he isn't extremely old either...4 y/o) he is a huge tomcat...(but a big ole baby). He has thrown up here and there in the past, but not enough that i'd think there was a problem (considering his rat, bird, rabbit, and cat food diet). The price the vet said for the blood panel, was the price charged for treating him "by symptom"...$170.....and I'm really not sure my cat got any help other than the fluids they give him....
IDK what to do? I don't want to sell my buddy short, but I'm not made out of money either.....I know the description is vague, but has anyone had a seemingly healthy cat turn to this state seemingly overnight?

I would get him to the vet for blood work.  He also needs to be checked to be sure he's not picked up some kind of poison and to rule out a blockage.  I would get him to the ER vet if it was me.

You need to think about what your willing to put in to this to have him pull through. It could end up being quite expensive but it might end up being less then going into panic mode and not being able to budget rationally. Get the tests done, blood work and an x-ray so you can hopefully at least have a starting point to work from if you able. There's just so many things it could be, that without further diagnosis your just shooting in the dark.

I'd vote for the blood panel too. That will say if there is an infection that would benefit from the antibiotic. Did the vet feel his bladder to see if he had a urinary blockage? What about feeling his gut to see if there was maybe constipation?

It could be so many things.

Thank you all for your responses. He's not throwing up that I've seen anymore, but something is surly wrong. I'm going to carry him back in irregardless to try and find out what has happened to make sure it isn't contagious to my other cats.

I would do xray and bloodwork. Go from there. Sometimes they get sick and we don't know what is wrong. the GOOD news is many things 10 yrs ago we couldn't treat for is now treatable. The reason he felt good for a day=the fluids and anti nausea meds. He may need to be on this for a couple of weeks to get over the virus or whatever is going on but you need the bloodwork. you need to know exactly is going on. make sure the bloodwork is a combo cbc (complete blood count) and chem analysis=which tests the levels of each organ.

Sometimes there is nothing that can be done other than supportive care: fluids/pain meds/anti nausea meds/anti acid and food-sometimes cats get pancreatitis but it isn't always show up on bloodwork or ultrasound. The treatment for this is the same as I listed above=fluids/ food/pain meds/anti nausea and anti acid meds until they eat on their own and retain their hydration.

the other thing to note=not sure where you are=the HEAT is a BIG factor! I currently am dealing with an older kitty who lost a ton of weight in 9 days and the heat is part of the problem.

if you have AC use it. This will help keep your cats hydrated=they are desert animals and don't have a lot of liquid in their bodies like we do-so anyway we can preserve their hydration will make them feel a TON better!

Just remember a dehydrated cat looks and feels HORRIBLE. If nothing else keep those fluids going and food-baby food-treats-lunchmeat-fish-chicken-steak=whatever to keep those calories up. where your kitty is 20 lb it will take twice as much food to maintain his weight as my cats who are around 10-12-12 lbs. So keep that in mind.

when mine are ill I put them on kitten chow=its the most bang for the least buck-as far as calories-or you can ask the vet for AD canned food=its a pate style recovery wet food that has lots of calories. you may need to learn to syringe feed but that part where he made a cry of help sounds like something else-they need to make sure he is making urine and passing stool.

for poop issues--ask the vet for info on using Miralax or canned pumpkin if he is constipated.

the xray will hopefully show if there is an intestinal blockage but if he didn't puke on the meds-more than likely this isn't a blockage but that isn't always true. I hope they figure out what's going on!

Just an update on Morris. I had to go to work yesterday, and I hated to leave my old boy considering how he was feeling. I've had the AC running around the clock to keep it as comfortable in the house as I could for him. I was afraid of what I'd walk in and find when I got home yesterday afternoon. To my pleasant surprise, I was met at the door by him, and he was wanting to go out (his normal daily routine). I didn't let him out though, just in case he originally got into something that made him sick and went back to it. I monitored his movements the entire afternoon. He is eating and drinking, and keeping it down. He is jumping up and down off of the couch and the bed (before he would just walk a few feet and stretch out in the floor) He is definitely feeling better. I'm going to continue to monitor his eating, drinking, and BM's.....feed him the things some of you have suggested, and love and pamper him.

Great news!!  I hope he continues to improve.  You might want to consider keeping him strictly indoors to reduce the likelihood of him getting into something toxic outside.

This very same thing seem to happen to one of our cats, he is younge so this is his first summer. He threw up so much the vomit was red at the end and he had blood in his poop the next day. The day before was very hot for here. My thread was called vomit everywhere. He was treated for parasites and give antibiotics because he had a fever but thats it for 150 $ they did not suggest blood work . He is better but not 100% and his lymph nodes are swollen but she didn't notice that.
We had a cat that ate a button ( he still with us) and the throw up never STOPPED and he had blood work first then the x - ray . So it your budgeting do one the the other it he still keeping food down do bloods

This afternoon...he was like the old Morris.....very vocal about going outside...(I had also worried that he didn't make a sound meowing....only grunts and groans the last 3 days)......he understands NO....and will actually talk to me and very plainly (when he's healthy) says..."OUT"......the smartest cat (and gentlest) I've ever seen or had......I figure he's used a couple of his 9 lives....so he'll be inside for a while....
