Afternoon. I was wondering what steps my fellow cat lovers took to make sure there aging or senior cats are in good health. Are there extra tests or procedures you do to ensure your senior kitty remains in good health. For example cholesterol testing?

There is a senior blood panel that needs to be done and be sure the thyroid is checked as well as your kitty checked for diabetes.  On the blood panel, you want to watch their BUN and creatinine for signs of kidney problems.  Also, as kitties age, they usually develop arthritis, so watch for signs of that such as not jumping any longer, not squatting in the litter box any longer, and generally "gimpy" walking.

Other than a general blood panel, I don't do anything extra.  I grew up in a world where we treated illnesses if needed but didn't do much preventative things other than vaccines (every 3 years) and dental cleanings.  I still think that way, and treat myself the same way also.  I don't get all those screening things for myself either.  My cats get a diet of both grain free canned food (turkey & giblets) and relatively low carb dry food (except for two of them who are not allowed dry food at all) plus goat's milk and yogurt, as well as cooked chicken from the grill or the oven, depending on what I'm eating.  This seems to work well.  Nobody is overweight (except me) and nobody has diabetes or hyperthyroid and the 17-year-old doesn't even have any signs of kidney disease on her last blood panel.  In this crew if FIP doesn't get them, it appears they will live to be a ripe old age.
