I've noticed my cat Cookie, has had a lot of dandruff on her back (along the spine) and then I later noticed that she had some scabs there too. They weren't bleeding and they didn't seem to bother her unless you touched that part of her back. I scheduled an appointment for the vet tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if they knew the cause of it?

Sounds like she's scratching the dry skin which irritates her. My cat does this a fair bit when his skin dries out and sometimes will scratch until he bleeds.

I took her to the vet to discover that she had flea dirt. Not on her back though mostly on her stomach, so I didn't even notice. She also scheduled her for grooming so she's shaved and I got a better look at these big and small spots of brown and with specks in them (the flea dirt) and noticed that it caused some hair loss in the areas with the dirt. Will it grow back once it's gone? And how do I get rid of the flea dirt?

A bath or wet wash cloth should get rid of the flea dirt. Be warned though, it turns red because it's dried blood.

Yes, your kitties fur should grow back unless the hair loss has been caused by some kind of scarring :)

Mine gets that from flea allergy (this is the 2nd kitty I've had who gets it). The scabs are most likely from scratching. Check for flea dirt (not that you always see it) and if she isn't flea treated treat her now, hopefully it will help. the vet is a good idea, the scabs can become infected. Let us know how she goes :)

My Gracie girl has the dandruff on her back near the base of her tail. Our vet said it was due to her weight issue because she couldn't herself easily. I brush her regularly so I am not sure about what the vet said.

Hello! Terribly sorry for never updating but thank you all so much for your replies! Scabs are gone and hair grew back with minimal dandruff.

Omega 3 can help dry, itchy skin too....along with other things. They have it at pet stores. You just sprinkle it on their food.
