This is a question that has recently come up, as I am hoping to add a furry fellow to our family, preferably in the shaded category. I've found one that's being advertised as shaded but has a grey overcoat rather than silver like I'm accustomed to seeing.

So is there a such thing as grey or blue shaded persian?

This is the Cat Fanciers Association's breed profile for the Persian. They go into detail about coat colors here http://cfa.org/Breeds/BreedsKthruR/Persian.aspx

Do you have a picture of the cat that we can see? @posiepurrs  breeds and shows Persians so she might be able to give you more insight.

Yes there are Blue shaded, blue chinchilla in both the silvers and the goldens. Here is an excerpt from one of the breed clubs websites:

"Blue chinchilla silver Persian: Undercoat pure white. Coat on back, head, flanks and tail sufficiently tipped with blue to give a sparkling appearance. Legs may be slightly shaded with tipping. Chin, ear tufts, stomach and chest, pure white. rims of eyes, lips and nose outlined with blue. Nose leather: rose. Paw pads, blue or rose. Eye color green or blue green.

Blue shaded silver persian: Undercoat white with a mantle of blue tipping shading down from the sides, face and tail from dark on the ridge to white on the chin, chest, stomach and under the tail. Legs to be the same tone as the face. the general effect is to be much darker than a chinchilla. rims of eyes, ls and nose outlined with blue. Nose leather Rose. Paw pads blue or rose. eye color green or blue green."

They were recognized by the CFA around 2011. I know the first blue golden granded in December of 2011 - in 1 show!

Do you have a photo of the kitten in question? Check the paw pads on the kitten to see what color they are. Is it from a show breeder? I only ask because the blues are still relatively rare. I myself have only seen 2 blue silvers in all the time since they were accepted. Please ask for a copy of DNA test results for the parents. If genetic testing has not been done - RUN AWAY!

Blue Shaded Silver Undercoat pure white. Coat on back, flanks, head, and tail sufficiently tipped with blue to give a sparkling appearance. Legs may be slightly shaded with tipping. Chin, ear tufts, stomach, and chest, pure white. Rims of eyes, lips, and nose outlined with blue. Nose leather: rose. Paw pads: blue or rose. Eye color: green or blue-green. Disqualify for incorrect eye color, incorrect eye color being copper, yellow, gold, amber, or any color other than green or blue-green. The Color Number for males is 0128 and for females 0129.

The post is a mess - sorry. I tried copying ans pasting but thought it didn't work so I typed it all in. Then the pasted part appeared after I had posted. Couldn't figure out how to edit. There is a correction to the date they were accepted - it was in 2009. i emailed the breeder who granded the first one and she corrected me on the date.

The two above are of baby in question. I apologize for the blurriness of these. They are the only ones I have.
This is the father I believe.

But I did notice that it looks like dad does meet the qualifications (at least the parts that can be seen from photo). But the baby looks like nose is blue rather than Rose, so does that mean he isn't shaded?

Thank you for the responses!

Another quick question... if this little guy is in fact a blue shaded & I breed him with a solid blue female , will the kittens all be solid blue's? I've been trying to understand genetics. I know breeding 2 blues can only result in blues. So I'm wondering if I'll get blue shaded or if the blue will overrule since it's on mom and dad's side?

That may be a dumb question, and I apologize if it is. I'm still so confused by genetics. I've done a good bit of research over the last 6 months but it still perplexes me.

He kitten looks to be a blue, not a blue shaded. There is way to much color- I don't see any white undercoat. Father looks to be a brown tabby with possibly green eyes. Do you know the pedigree? Breeding shaded with other colors ( copper eyed colors) can ruin the off springs eye color. Since you seem to be thinking of breeding, try to find an experienced mentor - they would be able to help you more.

Thank you so much for providing that information! He isn't going to be a cheap investment and I don't want to make a mistake in purchasing him based on misinformation or for the wrong reasons. You caught me just before I was going to put a deposit on him!

I do see now what you mean about there not being any white at all on dad! I was mainly looking at his face, but now I'm seeing there is no white there either!

I have not seen pedigree for him yet as he is not located in my state so I won't know (or wouldn't have known) until I was there to pick him up. Since I know now that he doesn't fit the bill for everything I was wanting this will save me a long drive to say the least. Thank you so much!

Just for my own knowledge, here's a pic of the female I was considering breeding. Will her eyes throw the eyes of my shaded (if or when I find the right one)? She is 10 weeks old now if that helps in determining whether or not her eye color will change. I believe her dad (blue persian) has amber colored eyes and mom has green (dark chocolate/almost black persian) eyes.

No I don't believe you will get the green eyes breeding your blue girl to a shaded. It is possible but if you do the color will most likely be a very yellow washed out green. It would best best to start with 2 shaded silvers if you want green eyed cats. When I said I didn't see evidence of a white undercoat, I meant on the kitten, not the sire. The sire is a green eyed brown tabby( not a recognized combination in the CFA) brown tabbies must have copper eyes. There are several good websites that explain the genetics of the inhibitor gene. When I get home from work I will pm them to you.

Yes, I definitely see what you mean about kitten not having white now.

What about this one? What would call this coloring? The coat is very pretty but they both have brown or amber eyes. So they wouldn't be shaded.
Maybe smoke?

The eyes are awfully runny. I suppose this is normal since they have extreme faces?

KatsPurrrsians KatsPurrrsians in your last post of that kitten, the middle picture appears to be a different one than the top and bottom pictures. I don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not haha, but with the eye running it is normal but it still shouldn't be that dirty. It has to be cleaned daily because not only does it stain the coat, it can lead to health problems with the eyes.

They are indeed different kittens lol. The lady has 5...all similar colors. I think the top and bottom are the same however. And YAY! I'm super glad to hear that he is shaded! I hope though that his coat has not gotten stained due to lack of breeder cleaning his eyes :( poor little guy.
The breeder is the sweetest older lady though. Bless her heart, I think she just has her hands full at her age with all the kittens. Kittens are 3 months old.
So out of curiosity, what do these types of kittens normally go for? They are registered with CFA & have had all shots and boosters.

Registered and everything they usually go anywhere from $600 and up, depending on whether they are show or pet quality, rarity of color, and whether you buy with breeding rights or not. If they go cheaper than $500 i would seriously read into their pedigree and make sure the papers are legitimate. I bought a kitten from a lady and I thought I was getting a good deal at $500 for a registered himmie, turns out the papers were false and I got a totally different breed of cat that she couldn't sell.

My experience doesn't hold true for all situations of course, just be extra careful and if you ever feel off about something or if something doesn't line up question it! A good breeder is never afraid of questions.

The kitten is a silver tabby, NOT a shaded! The eyes do not always tear when a Persian is 'flat faced'- which this cat is not. A breeder quality cat is going to cost more than $700. My least expensive breeder cost $1000. Anything less is probably from a back yard breeder. I can't get the websites for you right now- my modem is down at the moment. Before anyone jumps to the conclusion that breeders are making money hand over fist- they don't. In all the time I was breeding I never made a profit and neither do any of the breeders I know. With the cost of genetic testing, medical care, good food, grooming costs, and the list goes on, Otis hard to even break even.

Well i'll be, it sure is a tabby! I'm learning so much from this forum already!
So you think the tearing is normal even though his face is not completely flat? My blue female doesn't tear at all which is why I was a little concerned. But then again her facial structure is a lot different than this one's. I can see I have a lot to learn before going in the breeding direction. But I do like kitten, whether I choose to breed him or not. I will let you all know if I end up getting him
Thank you all again for the invaluable information!

No, the tearing is not a normal thing.
