I have tried many times (and failed miserably!) to grown "cat grass" outdoors on a strip of soil in Enzo's outdoor cat enclose (he is not allowed to free roam in the yard). He loves nibbling on grass but for whatever reason he'll only do it outdoors, so growing it inside has proved pointless. I have tried the tradition cat grasses outside (wheat, oat) and it never fails to wither and die. It sprouts indoors and once planted outside grows lush and green and gets my hopes up that THIS is the time it will last, but it never does. It is watered daily (or as needed) and is planted deep enough in the soil according to the instructions. I'm at a loss. Is it safe to plant the type of regular grass I would grown in a yard? Does anyone have any suggestions about any types I may not have tried yet? Thank you!!

My cat is the same! She loves to chow down on grass as soon as we go outside on her leash but grow any kind of grass indoors and she won't touch it. There are several different grasses that grow naturally in my back yard, and I've tried to identify them but I'm not very good at it. But, it seems pretty much everything in the grass family is pretty safe for cats to nibble on! So I would assume that whatever grass you're growing in your yard would be safe, as long as it isn't treated with any pesticides or other chemicals. Also, be sure there aren't other potential toxic plants growing with the grass.

I have a small lawn of ordinary garden grass and both my cats love to nibble on it. If you are able to buy a roll of lawn grass and place it on watered flattened soil that should catch and grown as long as it is watered well for the first couple of weeks. I live in the UK and it usually comes in a roll by the square metre.

Okay perfect! Thank you! I didn't think regular grass so long as it wasn't treated would be harmful but I just wanted to be sure. Apparently the stuff marketed as "cat grass" is *supposed* to be better for them, but that may be a marketing strategy by the cat grass industry =) Thank you again!
