Rambo, a 9-year old DSH, started having crusty scabs all around the outside and rim of both ears -- but nowhere else. This just started about 2 weeks ago.

I took Rambo to the vet last week.

The vet said she was 95% sure that Rambo's ears got sunburned. Rambo was normally an indoor cat when he was with his previous owner, but now he goes outside to my balcony where he sometimes sleeps in the sun, so the sunburn theory sounds plausible. There is shade over part of the balcony but Rambo just likes to lie in the sunlight.

The vet said he does not have mites. She said the inside of his ears would be much dirtier if he had mites.

The vet swabbed out his ears, cleaned up the scabs, put some ointment on his ears, gave him anti-biotic for any infection, and put a cone on him and said keep it on for a week. Here's what the vet did:
- Clean / Flush Wound Level 1

- Convenia 80mg/ml Injectable

- Ear Swab & Microscopic Exam

- Feline Snap Test (FeLV/FIV/Heartworm)
It's been 3 days now -- maybe it's too soon -- but Rambo still has scabs and what looks like blisters.

Do you know what this is?

Has your cat had this?

Do you think his ears got sunburned?

Could this be an allergy?

Acne?

Mange?

If an allergy, acne, or mange, then why is it nowhere else?

Thanks,

Does he get a monthly flea treatment?  Could be a flea allergy.  Did she test for ringworm, though that's probably not the case, but good to rule out.  He'd probably also have it elsewhere on his body.  Have you recently changed his food or litter?

Yes, but only recently. I got Rambo about 2 months ago. He doesn't have fleas, I checked.

I have another cat, Kilia, and she's perfectly fine. She doesn't have fleas either. I also have a dog, Ruger, and he doesn't have fleas. Everyone is on flea & tick monthly treatments.

But maybe Rambo got bit by something with his explorations of the new outdoor world.

Litter has been the same Tidy Cat since I got Rambo 2 months ago. He's been eating the same Kit 'n Kaboodle dry food and Friskies wet food since I got him 2 months ago and never had a problem. He gets a variety of flavors of Friskies wet food. I may have picked up a different flavor can but don't remember. Usually it's a variety of cans of seafood, chicken, and turkey flavors. He loves them all.

I would get a second opinion and ask the vet to do a scraping to see if there's any fungus or bacterial skin infection going on.
