Hi everyone,

Well, this is my situation, a friend asked me to adopt one little kittie, they are really malnourished and he told me that they are offspring of parents who are brothers, I have been looking for information about this and I found that is called inbreeding, this is the first litter of this two cats.

They seem fine, they play and eat like any cat, but Im a little concern about how they will grow up. Does anyone has a similar experience?

This are the kitties

As long as the kittens are healthy, they should live long, healthy and happy lives just like any other kitten. :)

Do you know anything about the health of the parents? Your kitten will in all likelihood be fine.

Now that you have him, what are you feeding and how often?

Are you able to talk to your friend about spaying and neutering?

I think any defects would have shown up by now. If they're healthy now they should be fine as long as you take good care of them.

The first generation of inbreeding is usually OK. After 3 or 4 generations, not so OK :/. So it kind of depends what their ancestors were up to ;). Just make sure they don't get any chances to repeat the mistake---have them spayed/neutered before they get to sexual maturity! (Which can be as early as 4 months for females so be careful).

And do try to encourage the owner of the parent cats to get them spayed/neutered too so it doesn't happen again.

The purpose of inbreeding or line breeding is to increase the likelihood that desirable traits will show up in the Kittens but undesirable traits can be set in as well. It is possible that they might have some problems later on depending on what recessive traits the parents carried. There's no way of knowing right now though and while they are at increased risk of certain undesirable traits showing up it may never be any issue.

Im feeding him 2 times in the day, one in the morning and the other at 6pm. Is that alright? I have been with him for 3 days, definitely im thinking of spaying at the time he has the better age. I just got scared because, I've seen other baby cats and they don't look like Rufus :( he has this different gaze, Im hopping I can make him to recover his health. I was thinking on traveling with him because we have this friends trip, but I think is not going to be the best option right now </3

Yeeees totally, at the time he told that the parents were siblings i got a little scared, I mean, in a society world that is not very well seen, and its kinda weird. But reading all this comments make me more serene.

He should be eating much more than that. Leave dry kitten food down for him all the time and feed 4-6 meals of wet kitten food per day. You are catching him up from being in poor health, and you really can't overfeed a kitten.

He needs to be dewormed and vaccinated when he is about 8 weeks old.

He should definitely be neutered. It's an excellent way to ensure that both owner and kitty stay healthy and happy. Why are you not sure?

And I agree that he's not old enough or well enough to travel. He needs to stay safe at home.

Yes! Please feed your kitten wet food 4-6 times a day with access to dry kitten food 24/7. He needs it!
