Good afternoon,

I know this may sound ridiculous but I have an almost 3 month old female Russian blue kitten she gets 3\4 cups freely and Purina kitten food and a full tablespoon of canned kitten food 3x a day. She started getting picky she gobbled down the Fancy Feast kitten turkey canned I gave her along with Purina Pro Plan kitten minced salmon put she didn't like salmon or seem hungry so chicken and liver. The adoption agency that I got her from was feeding her kitten dry food and Friskies turkey and giblets canned. What I would like to know is is it safe to feed canned food that doesn 't say kitten like Fancy Feast or Friskies or 9 lives? I am trying to keep it so she doesn't get picky about her food.

?

Yes, feed her whatever wet food she likes. Kitten food is usually higher in calories and protein, but as wet food is important, feed her what she will eat. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Hello,

It me again my Russian blue female kitten turned 3  months old today. I want to know if I feeding her properly. She has been getting a tablespoon of canned kitten at 9:30 am, 2:00 pm, 10:30 pm and 12:00 am (which is 4x a day) plus I leave a small bowl of dry kitten food (3\4 cups) out. She won't touch the dry and has been chowing down on canned and she still is meowing like she is hungry. When should I start giving her a half can of food? When I weighed her today she was 2.8lbs. How do I get her to eat dry food as well.

It sounds as though your kitten prefers wet food, and clearly she needs quite a bit more at each feeding. I would increase her food immediately.

Wet food is actually better for cats than dry food. While your kitten is still growing rapidly, she really needs as much wet food as she can eat. She needs to gain 1 pound per month until she is 6 months old.

Is the dry food kitten chow? That is what it should be for the first year.

Give her 1/4 to 1/3 of a can.  If she wolfs it down right away give her more.  As she grows she will need more at each feeding.  She will also go through growth spurts where she will eat as much as 5 cans a day.  On those days, just keep opening the cans.

What size cans are you using? Small cans give 1/2. Large can give 1/3 per feeding. As Handsome Kitty said, if kitty scarfs it up and looks for more, give another spoonful. You need to play it by ear a bit.

You can't really force her to eat it. Just continue to make the dry food available. She may decide to eat it eventually.

I am giving her a small can but it looks like her stomach can't handle it cause last night she had soft unformed stools. The reason why I questioned about the dry kitten food is cause when it comes time to switch to adult our three adult cats are eating a low ash vet prescribed dry food that prevents crystals. I would like to when the time comes do with both kittens a gradual introduction to the new food

It could be her system adjusting, or she may have an allergy to an ingredient in the food.

Have you tried plain, boiled chicken in broth? Or a spoonful of plain, canned pumpkin?

You can also sprinkle a probiotic into her food to help her gut.

I know this may sound gross but i was wondering if someone can help me with her stools.  Thley are sometimes formed and sometimes flat and formed. She was dewormed earlier this month and next month she'll get another dosage. I was told by her foster mom that all the kittens that she had started to shed in their stools the worms from the first deworming round. She has an excellent appetite and isn't lethargic or anthing like that. I have been feeding her canned kitten food a tablespoon 4x daily cause her stomach is small (this wil be a two week thing and then I;ll increase in small increments) and she also gets 3\4 cup of dry kitten food.  Should i take her to the vet and bring a stool sample as well or what

I had her since the beginning of this month her foster mom was feeding her adult cat food wet and dry I went with what my vet said kitten canned and dry and small amounts so she gets 4x a tablespoon of canned kitten and will gradually in two weeks bring her up to a tablespoon and 1/4 and she gets dry kitten 3/4 cup freely. She was wormed around the 15th of this month and was told that they were all shedding the worms she gets another deworming next month

The change in food will have effected her stools but she should be getting used to the kitten food by now.  I wouldn't worry unless the kitten gets diarrhea.  We'd love to see a picture of your kitten.

sorry, im not sure I understand the problem you ask for.  Is it the poo isnt really firm?

This may be several causes, including trying with another brand of food...

Deworming is standard as such, and apparently necessary.  YOU didnt mention if your blue did shed dead worms, but the littermates did, so we must presume yours had them too.  Its done say during the week after the dosage

What Im thinking on, the portions you mention is rather meagre for a playful, growing kitten.  If you notice she wants more, give her more...

Kittens that age dont need milk, water is fine as main fluid source, but goats milk is alwasy an useful supplement.

Ugh ok some of her stools we're formed and some we're flat and formed. I was told small amounts and gradual increase. I tried a half can it just sent her stomach upset so vet said small amounts.

So we need to work on her food some...  Im at work now, dont have the peace of mind to think, but here we do have THE problem.

If you can get goats milk, do use that. She needs the nourishment.

Plain full fat mild youghurt is too useful, esp if it has added acidophilus and bifidus bacteria.  Works as a mild probiotic...

Try mixing a teaspoon of plain, canned pumpkin into her wet food. It provides fiber and cats like it.

I also previously suggested sprinkling a probiotic into her wet food. Have you tried it yet? They can make a huge difference in the flora of the colon.

I think a second worming will make a difference too. It should take place 2 weeks from the first one though.

Let us know if her issues improve.

Ok, so here we do have two problems - the rareish poo - where you got some suggestions.

The second is, she seems to get  too little food.  I understand the advice, if she is unused to some new type of food, to start with small portions -   but usually this is supplemented with their normal food.  This advice is also life saving when they are emaciated when you found them...

But here - 1.  A food she must be adapted too during a long time - Im not sure its worth it, there are other good kittens foods, which are easier to digest.

2. Second, Im perhaps misunderstanding you, reading too quickly or something, but growing and playing kittens eats a lot, so she needs nourishment...  If you dont have anything else, do supplement with goats milk or kitten mothermilk replacement....  Both are mild and easy digestible.

IF she doesnt play much????, it may even be a sign she is too weak for it???
