My outside/stray cat has what I believe is an abscess from a Warble/Botfly. There's a mass the size of a toddlers fist under the skin near the hole and I believe the larva has already hatched and fallen out. I'll be taking the cat the to the vet's either Monday or Tuesday, depending on what they say. And this is definitely from a Warble and not a fight related injury.

Anyway... I'm sure she'll require antibiotics. Most vets nowadays push Convenia, which, I'm unsure about. What is most likely to be the best antibiotic for this type of abscess: Amoxicillin, Clavamox or Convenia? I don't mind administering pills or liquid twice a day, I just want to make sure she's getting the best treatment for her abscess.

Thanks

My rescue took in a kitten 2 weeks ago with a wolf worm/botfly larva...whatever you want to call it. We treated with Clavamox and he is now healed 100%.

Stay away from Convenia.  I know it's convenient for some, but it's got too many negative side effects for my liking.

I took the cat in Monday and they cleaned and treated the hole and prescribed Amoxicillin. They said they were out of Clavamox and the only other option was Convenia.

The cat (Mouser) had been improving until last night (Tuesday). Then she showed up with what apears to be nasal congestion and something similar to sniffles. There's no nasal discharge, but she has a lack of appetite and seems to be getting worse. I'm worried something was missed in relation to the Warbles. I know they can cause respiratory illness if they get into the trachea and other places. Has anyone had this problem before?

I called the vet and they can't get me in until Wednesday the 27th!

Are you able to bring her inside?  Maybe you can keep her in a bathroom? The stress of going to the vet probably triggered the upper respiratory infection symptoms you're seeing.  If she's still on amoxi then she should be okay, but you really need to keep an eye on her and monitor her.
