My 10 year old renal failure cat receives fluids every other day. She's super anemic to the point where I need to consider trying epogen injections. Anyone use it before? If so, how often are the injections and how did it help. Thanks

My cat Sandra is currently on Aranesp (Darbepoetin) for her anemia.  She also has renal failure (advanced).  She was admitted to the emergency vet hospital on July 4 and was severely anemic (original HCT was at 15.7).  She ended up getting a blood transfusion which brought her HCT upto 23.  She had her first Aranesp injection last a week ago.  I took her to the vet yesterday to recheck HCT, and she is now at 26.  She is still anemic so the vet had me give her another injection yesterday and next Saturday she will be going in again for another HCT recheck.  The vet said once her HCT is in the 30s, I can reduce injections to once every 2-3 weeks.

My vet chose Aranesp because it has less potential of for the patient to develop an antibody reaction.  The risk is greater with Epogen.

Sending prayers that your baby gets better.

I purchased it from the Walmart Specialty Pharmacy (not the same as the regular Walmarts around) for $204.  It's an online pharmacy.  The vial lasts for about 7 doses.  If your cat is to go on Aranesp, please make sure to get from this specialty pharmacy - it's hassle free and will definitely save you a big headache, and I believe they have it at the cheapest price.
