The vet called last night with my cat's urinalysis results. Based on the results, the vet feels that we should treat for a "silent UTI."

What I want to know is how my cat got a UTI in the first place.

He's approximately 15 years old. He's on a canned food only diet and has been for awhile.
I'm confused as to why he got a UTI on a strictly canned food diet.

Could hygiene play a role? He rarely grooms himself.

I am afraid at 15 years old there may not be a direct reason. Just like humans who are aging, things just do not work as well as they used to. Even canned/wet food is not guarantee. I have had 15 year old cats that ate dry food their whole life and never got UTI.

Keep you eye on him as a blockage can turn into an emergency.

It could be a result of something else such as decreased kidney function or diabetes. Given her age and how rare UTI's are by themselves I'd suspect it's a symptom of another problem. I'd talk to your vet about testing for both .

We've already done the testing. We ruled out diabetes and hyperthyroidism. His kidney numbers were very slightly abnormal but not extremely far away from the normal range. We did bloodwork before doing the urinalysis.

I'll see what the vet says about his kidneys.
