I think pumpkin is working for my cat, as the diarrhea has stopped (cross fingers, knock wood) for nearly 24 hours & normally we can't get past 12. But he HATES it. I had to syringe it, which normally he accepts without too much fuss, but he was fighting me horribly last night. He must really hate it! So can you guys give me some alternatives? Can cats have Metamucil?

My vet gave my babies a syringe tube of chicken flavored probiotic. When they were kittens I used plain unflavored yogurt in their gruel. Werva makes a food called Pumpkin Lickin Chicken, nice shreds of chicken in a pumpkin sauce.
I personally have never used a human medicine on a cat and would not do so without my vets advice, maybe someone else can chime in on that.
Has your baby been to the vet to find a reason for the diarrhea?

I found this old TCS thread about giving Metamucil to cats: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/218092/what-kind-of-metamucil-am-i-supposed-to-give It looks like pure psyllium husk is the ingredient that helps bulk up stool. You can buy just plain 100% pure psyllium husk and avoid the flavorings and other stuff that is in Metamucil. Metamucil or plain psyllium husk needs to be dissolved in water first and then mixed into canned food. Givng the dry powder as is may result in a dehydrated cat.

You should ask the vet first before using Metamucil or generic equivalent for the proper dose and frequency for your cat.

Thanks guys, I'm not going to do it, diarrhea is resolving! Yay! He is taking the pumpkin better now.

He did go to the vet twice in the last 3 weeks. He had giardia & coccidia & took 3 different antibiotics. But now he has a clean bill of health, only an angry tummy from all the parasites & antibiotics. We are resting his GI system now with a GI diet & getting the gut balance back to normal with probiotics. But he needs a bit of fiber, as well. Thanks for the input & I will not mess around with stuff without asking my vet.

I've used dried pumpkin flakes (avail in pet food stores) - its easy to mix into canned food and I think its less noticable than canned or fresh cooked.  Its also easier to keep a tupperware container of it around than freezing icecube trays of canned!
