Garlic in Cat Food! What on Earth...?

I am always trying to broaden the choice of products in our house.  We have kibble from Evolve in the cupboard so I thought I would investigate the wet food recipes from the same company.  Imagine my surprise to learn that both the Chicken and the Turkey formulas include GARLIC POWDER!  I thought garlic was terribly unhealthy for cats.

It's all in the dosage. I'm sure it contains a very minute amount, but some people are understandably uncomfortable feeding it in any amount. 

@TheGreyStalker im really lucky my 5 yr old cat won'teat anything but 9 lives wet Meaty Pate' Chicken & Tuna day in and day out I tried other kinds she would smell it from a distance and walk away till i give her back her 9 lives I don't think there's garlic but now I'm going to look

Yes, its a riddle of sorts.  Apparently garlic in tiny amount isnt poisonous, you need a bigger dosage to be harmful.

Yet, the problem is, it may learn them to appreciate the taste of garlic, and if not watched, they may perhaps eat something with much garlic in.  Say, a heavily seasoned human food...

Its almost the same with chokolade.  In minuskule amount it doenst seem to harm them, yet its one of the true poisons for cats, if they get in them say a piece of dark chokolade...

@Kacy there was no garlic although a tiny bit would not have bothered me like you said(in the 9 Lives Meaty Pate' Chicken & Tuna)

I was told that raw garlic is hazardous but cooked garlic is soso-meaning they can have a very tiny amount but I would prefer none since they can't metabolize this. They don't have the enzymes to break down the wastes from garlic is how it was explained to me. That for some reason it doesn't get filtered out of their blood. I would recommend steering clear.

I have seen some use it for flea control but honestly DE is a much safer option without worrying about it hurting the liver/kidneys.

Bootse, if your cat likes 9 Lives, then by all means keep feeding it to her.  The 9 Lives pates are not particularly bad, it's just the meat-by-products are the primary ingredient.  I don't mind MBP as one of several secondary ingredients, but it's better to have muscle meat as the number 1 ingredient.  GIve her a sample of Fancy Feast, which is not much more costly than 9 Lives.  Also, since you live in the northeast you may have a Stop & Shop Supermarket nearby.  Their store brand (also sold at Giant Supermarkets) called 'Companion' is perfectly fine.  And the Petsmart 'Grreat Choice' may appeal to your cat.  Good luck.

A lot of foods used to have garlic and claimed it was healthy, until more research was done and people started to not buy the food with garlic they seem to have stopped putting it in for the most part. But it always pays to be vigilant.

@i tried Fancy Feast Sheba and Meow MIx Wet my cat wants her 9 Lives and like I said we're both Lucky because I can afford her and she is Beautiful and Special and She gets what She PREFERS which makes us all HAPPY

It's 5:53 pm and we just had a really nice heavy rain shower here in South Philly we were all out on th porch loving it my husband myself and our 11yr old dog our 5yr old cat never comes out but I check on her here and there I still have to feed her she's sleeping like the little Princess She Is
