I just noticed a little blood in my cat's stools again. :( I had started him on a little Purina Sensitve Stomach (non grain-free) dry food 5 days ago. I wonder why this cat can not tolerate any dry food. I give him a daily mixture of 1 1/2 cans of canned food plus added water and dry kibble. Every 2-3 days I add 5 drops of fish oil to this mixture. Any ideas what is causing the bleeding? His stools never look moist enough. They are like a thick, dry putty consistency. He has been passing a lot of hair in his stools. Can a bulid up of hair in the intestinal tract cause small pebble like, dry stools? Can a build up of hair cause blood in stools? His stools have had traces of blood on and off for 4 months...every time I give him any kind of dry food along with his canned food. However he never has any blood in his stoools when he eats 100% canned food. The Vet has not found anything wrong with his last fecal test except coccidiosis 3+  which was totally shocking since he has never had any loose stools! He finished the Sulfa drug over 10 days ago. I took him him on Monday,3 days ago and the Vet said he no longer has a coccidiosis problem. Has anybody else had a cat that bled whenever it was fed any dry food?

Hi, I just replied to a thread by @howmany 'vomit everywhere'.

Blood in stool needs immediate attention. My boy had black tarred stools. Went to the vet and vet said could be GI Uulcerations. He vomitted dark bile like substance that smelled like blood. So I got him to the vet immediately. He got a jab for vomittng and also oral medications. Now no vomittng and I'm monitoring his stools.

Better don't delay and please bring him in

Hey tabby tom I should mention that the cat that is sick is not the food senstive cat I mention above this one is 4 and on top of being ween to soon he ate a button at about 8 months and it took awhile for the vet to figure out and 1000$ to remove it , but vet is on board with his tummy just being sensitive and all now and he has not vomit in 3 years

My rescued boy was just at the Vet 4 days ago and I was told he probably has a sensitive stomach. Without further expensive tests the Vet gave his opinion. I have spent $500. on this cat already and I honestly do not have hundreds of dollars for more tests. I need to narrow down what I want my cat to be tested for in the future when I am able to charge more on my credit card. I am a Disabled, Volunteer, Animal Rescuer who does not receive any contributions usually. I am in debt as a result. I really do the best I can to help my rescued animals. I am watching him very carefully, and within the past 24 hours his stools are looking much better being on 100%  Friskies Pate canned food. I just hope there is not something else wrong with him besides a sensitive stomach that is making him have bloody stools whenever he eats dry kibble food. I should mention that this cat has never vomited and he has never had any loose stools. He has a good appetite and is very active. However he is a nervous cat that fears new people and new situations. He gets stressed quite easily. Thanks everybody for all of your caring comments so far! :)

Thank you TabbyTom! :) He always gets better when he eats canned food. But he always starts to bleed again when any dry food is added to his diet....whether it is grain-free or not grain-free dry food. :(  I wish I could feed him some quality dry food too because he really likes dry food.

Why don't you let him stick to canned food? It has more moisture than dry food and it does not make him to have blood in his stools. Canned is better than dry.

I take it you are talking about red fresh blood?  If so this is often seen with constipation which dry food can contribute to.  I would try sticking with an all wet diet.

Does your kitty hack  up a lot of hairballs?   If not then the hair is doing what it is supposed to do, go through and out with stool.  Brushing your kitty a lot especially during shedding season helps a lot.  I got a Furminator for my longer hair kitty with a thick undercoat.

TabbyTom, It is difficult to feed him just canned food because he wants to eat very often when he is on a 100% canned food diet. I'm not home for several hours at a time some days. I won't leave extra canned food out because it will grow bacteria. Therefore he is hungry some days while I must go out for hours. I don't want him to be hungry or upset because he is out of food. Also he cries for dry food because he really loves dry food.

Denice my boy has red fresh blood spots on his stools and his stools are almost black when he eats dry food. I comb and brush him very often. I have a Furminator also. He has not coughed up any hair balls however a lot of his long hair comes out in his stools continuously. I was just wandering if he could have a build up of cat hair in his intestinal tract. He is longer haired and he sheds a lot all year round. His stools are always on the dry side even when he eats 100% canned food. I add water to his canned food also. I never had a younger cat with such dry stools. He is a young cat about 1 1/2 years old.

You can use a programmable timed feeder to give your cat canned food meals when you are not hoem. Some feeders have ice pack features to keep food cool.Canend food won't go bad if left in a feeder but you do wan to throw out any leftoveres at the end of the day. You can freeze canned food into serving size portions and pop the frozen food into the feeder compartments to slowly defrost and stay cool longer.  Catmate and Petsafe are two popular brands of feeders.

Sometimes undigested dry food pieces will irritate the rectum as it passes through as poop and may cause some minor bleeding. Feeding a higher quality mroe digestible dry food may help.

LTS3 thank you for your comment! :) However since he has black stools when he eats dry food doesn't this indicate that bleeding is occuring higher up than his rectum also?
