I read about others having cats that had eaten tainted or recalled food..

and feel so sorry for those that lost their pets or those that had sick animals...from it..

This week shocked me and I am not over it..I am worn out, stressed out

and cried and prayed to Jesus Christ to help Lily...for 2 days and nights..

Lily  was so weak ....almost lifeless

I decided something was not normal as her stool was runny at l am

and both cats had eaten their same food... Meow mix shrimp and tuna in the

foil can....and Blue Wilderness dry...

I do not take my cats to the vet often..however I felt I needed to take her so I did...He gave her 2 shots and an antibiotic...and she was not messing herself up at the vet...it started when we got back home...

I do not think any vet will say tainted food ..none that I have met...even if they suspect it..

She  did not drink one drop of water or food for 48 hours and I had a huge crate in the house which I put her inside with clean litter box..and

it was constant cleanup for 48 hours....she had nothing left inside her

intestines...

She was so sick and weak she did not even meow..to me...

I cleaned  the large open crate where I placed her..

with hydrogen perioxide while  taking her out to clean the crate and litter pan and then cleaning her up and laying her

back inside on clean towels.

Now Bro has thrown up twice in the last 2 days I went back to the vet to get

a once a day antibiotic for him..to take..

My cats will stay on Fancy feast canned and Blue Wilderness dry chicken

cat food ...from now on..no more fish or shrimp or anything made overseas

that might be tainted...in canned foods ...

I am so sorry to read that your cats have been sick @SheriT.   What ever the cause has been, may they both now be on the mend, and for you to see them fully recovered very soon.

Mouse servant!

Thank you so much.

Lily is better and Bro is improving..

they both seem to have a little fever

but both are getting  better..as of today.

Only problem I see is that Lily and Bro want the food

that had to be tainted...that they loved for l year wet food

and now they will not eat the Fancy Feast no matter what

flavor I have bought yesterday for them.

They do eat their blue wilderness dry but I need a wet food

to add their preventative dental plaque powder, Krill oil and

joint formula to it once a day ..

I am really glad they are both improving.  All very stressful.

Cats can be seriously picky about food  (Mouse is a one kind a food kind a guy and it has to be dry).
Worth telling your self though that they are also very sensitive to things being tainted, and it may not have been the food from the cat which caused all the upset so perhaps in the interests of them eating you could give it another go?

I called the store today and told them I wanted nothing  but told them the food

and they pulled it off the shelf ..and hung up..

I felt bad that any cat might have gotten this batch and I have  no proof..

All I could do..I do think it was tainted fish and shrimp.

The food is manufactured overseas ..the chicken one by them is done in

Thailand..I think...it was Meow Mix in the foil tubs...the one my cats ate

was the shrimp and tuna one..blue foil top..

I wonder if I should continue the baytrill she has taken it five days, one tablet a day

as told...but the side effects on that med are horrible..what could happen..

No one will say for sure ..no vet does but it appears she did have food poisoning

there was no reason to run a fever and have flooding of feces out the rear for 48 hours..

even after the shots he gave her ...on  Monday for e coli or whatever ..

she has had a baytril 22.7 mg once a day tues, wed, thur and friday, today..

She has 3 more days to take the baytrill and I hate to make her take it ..seeing there are warnings of

retina damage, muscle damage and more and more on the side effects for cats..

any thoughts?

Sheri.

Lily just ATE..she ate Fancy Feast chicken Feast Classic

So happy...so happy..

First she ate all day today

That Baytril was given to her this morning

so sure it made her not want to eat...till

tonight..

We will be buying more of this chicken feast Classic by Fancy Feast

for she and Bro ..

This and the Wilderness chicken dry adult... Indoor... formula are the two foods

they will have daily..

I hope to see the light at the end of the tunnel in a couple days when she is off the medication and

I am sure Bro is well..as he threw up twice and a fever but he is not sick enough to go to the vet.

It sounds like a really nasty, persistent bug and so good to hear at least Lily is eating and improved more.   Hang in there.

As for stopping the medication:  I always worry about stopping courses of antibiotics early unless there is a severe reaction as it affects the on going efficiency of the antibiotic not only for your cat but for all animals and humans dependent on antibiotics.   There are fewer and fewer antibiotics which bacterial infections are not resistant to.

Looking at the information for Baytril, the serious side effects for cats are where used at higher dosing than those detailed in this chart (souce drugs.com/vet).   If your vet has prescribed a higher dosage than this my advice is to call your vet again to talk it through.

Weight of Cat

Once Daily Dosing Chart (5 mg/kg/day)

5 lb (2.27 kg)

1/2 x 22.7 mg tablet

10 lb (4.5 kg)

1 x 22.7 mg tablet

15 lb (6.8 kg)

1 and 1/2 x 22.7 mg tablets or 1/2 x 68 mg tablet
All tablet sizes are double scored for accurate dosing.

She has the 22.7 tablet..and she weights 9 lbs

He wanted her to take it for 8 days..l pill per day

I asked him to weigh her...she is l year old and one month..

Do you think that is about right per once a day or could I cut it in half

the tablet is scored in the middle..and tiny..and give her half in the am and

half in the afternoon...due to not wanting to eat after it gets in her digestive

track each time?

your thoughts again...

I am just tired and need a little more opinion and I appreciate it from you

I am totally useless with numbers unfortunately, they don't make any sense to me.  Hopefully someone who can do basic arithmetic will see and be able to chip in.
     Wish I could help.

I see no one chimed in.  What did you decide to do?  Did you finish up with the Baytril?  I'm also no good with math, but whenever there is a question like that, I call my very trusted Vet and ask.  Yes, sometimes they  make mistakes, no doubt about it, but at least if you ask, they can take a second look, just to make sure.

How are the furkids NOW, by the way.  Hopefully all better.

I'm wondering too Sheri.  Fingers crossed that they are doing better, esp Bro not being sick still.

Ms Green jeans I thank you and Mouse servant cause all these folks on here no one said one word

but that will not keep me from coming on when I can and offering my compassion and an opinion

for what its worth..

I was not able to get the tiny pills down Lily , both husband and I held her by scruff of neck..and

also tried to roll them in the wet food..I got 3 of them in her and she had 5 more to go..

She is doing well..playing and just back to being wild like she always acts

loves to play with the laser pointer ..rather me play with her, sleeping and eating

her Blue Wilderness dry and lots of water...

She will NOT eat any canned food ..no matter whether it is the blue brand, proplan or Beyond

and we got the chicken ones for her..and Bro too

I have no idea why she resists canned food unless she knows the one that she got food poisoning

was canned food..

do you have any thoughts?

She needs a little canned daily for me to put her pro den plaque off powder in it to prevent tartar on her teeth

she had been getting that in her wet food for 6 months and I do not want to stop now

she had not had it for a week now...her teeth looked good at the vets last week..

I attribute it to the seaweed pro den plaque off powder..

any suggestions?

She did get shots of some kind at the vet so that and the 3 pills of baytrill seemed to make her well...

You might try putting some canned food out on a plate...spread it out and then crush some of her dry food and sprinkle it on top of the canned.  Just make it different than what it was before.  Maybe even warm it up a little bit.

I know about that dental plaque off you are using.  Was thinking about buying some myself for the boys.  I used to sprinkle it on their kibble years ago, but, of course, most of it ended up in the bottom of the kibble bowl.

Glad they are feeling better!

Thanks for sharing I got amused at your cat not wanting pills or other things...

yes Lily foamed at the mouth as she spit the tiny baytrill antibiotic out

I tried holding the mouth closed and all you could do but nothing worked past

the first 3 pills she did swallow..LOL

Well I tried the toothbrushing with CET when I first got her as her breath was SO BAD

I heard baby teeth time will make their breath bad..After 3 months using the pro den plaque off

she has the sweetest breath now...and nice looking teeth..

Question will her ingesting some of the CET ..perhaps a malt flavor if they sell it at the pet store..will that help prevent tooth tartar...or does she have to have the teeth brushed

each day with the CET?

Your thoughts on that?

Additive in the water will not work as it would be wasteful..two cats and not knowing who drank the most water and then cleaning out the water dishes each day..emptying...

so on the CET paste..does it work swallowing it only?

that is the problem the pro den plaque off does WORK but on dry food

they do not consume it ..it goes to bottom of the dish..

I am so frustrated as Lily has lovely teeth no tartar and sweet breath

at 14 months old eating canned wet and dry food..

I have tried the brushing and that does not work for her nor me...

any more thoughts?

I'm so sorry, I haven't checked the threads lately. Sounds like the eating part is good now. Was gonna suggest Fancy Feast Fish & Shrimp as an alternative to the other one you had been feeding. As far as pilling, will she take pill pockets?

The enzyme toothpastes like CET do work without the brushing.   I don't brush Mouse's teeth all the time as noted above, but there is a huge difference between when I let him lick the paste from my finger and not giving it to him:  even with his dental prescription food his gums will get red around the edges if I don't let him lick the toothpaste off my finger on a regular basis.  Because he has to have the dental routine long term or get really sick I was keen he experienced it as a treat rather than something to avoid.  Thankfully that has worked so far with the finger licking routine and only occasional brush - which he lets me do as long as it isn't too often.

I agree with you about the water additives: far too unpredictable esp if more than one cat.  I'd have similar worries about spinkling on food unless the cats were very good at only eating their own bowls (my girls always shared so it wouldn't have worked for them).

I like the ideas about warming the wet foods a little, and mixing a little wet with the dry.
