Doubting the vet

Hi all,
Our 11 month old cat ate several pieces of foam rubber. She vomited up most of the pieces. She has not had a bowel movement in two days and is not eating. She has been at the vets all day where she received X-rays and IV fluids. The vet gave her some oral lubricant. He says the foam piece still in her intestines is trying to pass. While I'm thrilled to not have a $2k vet bill, I'm unsure if he's correct in waiting. How long should it take for her to have a bowel movement? Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks all!

If she is not eating, she is very unlikely to produce a bowel movement.

Is the vet treating her with any medications to help with nausea and her appetite?

No, there was no mention for medications. She has vomited in a few days. She doesn't want to eat. Should I somehow force her, or let her do it on her own?

Last time she vomitted was late Monday night/Tuesday morning. I don't know when she last ate. She had a little on Tuesday, but not much.

If she is not eating by morning I would contact your vet and request some Cerenia to help with any nausea she may have. There is an injectable and pill form available (pill is labeled for dogs, but can be safely used in cats as well.) Under the circumstances, I would opt for the injectable as she cannot vomit this back up.

If nauseous the cause of her inappetence, the Cerenia should help, and fairly quickly.

If no increase in appetite is noted, an appetite stimulant is likely needed.

what did your vet say about her not eating? Did they give you a timeframe to go by?

If this were my cat I likely would attempt to force feed a small amount of canned food. If not nausea or vomiting occurred, I do a little bit more, keeping the portion size very small.

If there is vomiting after eating I would be very concerned about a blockage.

As a side note...
As your cat ever eaten a foreign body before? The cats that I have that have pica also have other health issues (IBD, pancreatitis...one even had a rudimentary second gallbladder which needed surgery to remove) that caused them to eat weird/inedible things. Luckily non of my cats have had a blockage from their eating, and ultimately their nausea/inappetence was due primarily to the underlying health issue.

Thanks for the response. She ate a about 1-2 tablespoons of wet food today, so that's good news. Waiting now to see if she keeps it down. She is still lethargic, understandably. But she seems aware of what's going on around her.

She has ingested things before. For whatever reason she really like foam rubber (like what you'd find on a nerf dart or mousepad). She hasn't eaten anything else that I know of.
